Since we're approaching the New Year...
I've been back with traditional knives a bit over 4 years now. It's been an educational, enjoyable, and interesting journey leaving the practical/ tactical world and stepping back to where it started for me almost 50 years ago. I've learned that some patterns I like don't really work well for me and my hands & fingers (peanuts, for one). And that patterns I looked at and thought "no way" turned out to work well (like Tear Drops). I've confirmed that Barlows continue to be my most like pattern. And that outside of SAKs, I generally prefer single blade patterns, although a few double-blade patterns work.
Years ago I had knives and tools in vehicle emergency kits, shelter-in-place kits, get-home bags, disaster grab bags. And was the family go-to guy for helping family members get their emergency preps in order. Now that I'm retired and not currently working, family members have passed, and I don't get out to do the things I used to do due to health... I have way too much stuff. I've collected and broken down all of the bags and kits, and am re-vamping my current setup. Goal is to have a minimalist emergency kit, and then do some culling of the "fun" stuff. I'll be keeping my Barlows, Tear Drops, Pocket Hunters, Small Swell Center Jacks, Medium Jacks, Large Pens, and single-blade Stockmens. Also keeping Tribal Locks and a single-blade Trapper or two.
Which brings me to the 2023 resolutions. Will do my best to stick with it but life happens, so nothing is set in stone. (More like wet concrete.)
1) Reduce the boxes of practical/ tactical to a small minimal number and type - will provide breathing room for my traditionals, and funds should I have a need for a purchase. And fits in with my 2023 general life goal of serious de-cluttering, there's too much stuff crammed into this tiny craptastic apartment. I miss elbow room, and I want it back.
2) Try to not do any traditional purchases in 2023.
(Yeah, I know, but I'll try to ignore the enablers including myself. Exception is to finish re-vamping my kitchen kit, there are a couple kitchen cutlery items I still need.)
3) Reduce my collected traditionals by about 1/3. To do that, I'll be gifting a few knives and might be running a pass-around and/ or give-away or two. The remainder on the chopping block will be trade fodder to try and acquire more GEC 14 Barlows.
And that's it. Simple, right? Just my thoughts on what I have planned for 2023.
If anyone else wants to contribute their 2023 goals/ resolutions, feel free to add. The more the merrier IMHO.
