2023 Traditional Resolutions

Since we're approaching the New Year...

I've been back with traditional knives a bit over 4 years now. It's been an educational, enjoyable, and interesting journey leaving the practical/ tactical world and stepping back to where it started for me almost 50 years ago. I've learned that some patterns I like don't really work well for me and my hands & fingers (peanuts, for one). And that patterns I looked at and thought "no way" turned out to work well (like Tear Drops). I've confirmed that Barlows continue to be my most like pattern. And that outside of SAKs, I generally prefer single blade patterns, although a few double-blade patterns work.

Years ago I had knives and tools in vehicle emergency kits, shelter-in-place kits, get-home bags, disaster grab bags. And was the family go-to guy for helping family members get their emergency preps in order. Now that I'm retired and not currently working, family members have passed, and I don't get out to do the things I used to do due to health... I have way too much stuff. I've collected and broken down all of the bags and kits, and am re-vamping my current setup. Goal is to have a minimalist emergency kit, and then do some culling of the "fun" stuff. I'll be keeping my Barlows, Tear Drops, Pocket Hunters, Small Swell Center Jacks, Medium Jacks, Large Pens, and single-blade Stockmens. Also keeping Tribal Locks and a single-blade Trapper or two.

Which brings me to the 2023 resolutions. Will do my best to stick with it but life happens, so nothing is set in stone. (More like wet concrete.)

1) Reduce the boxes of practical/ tactical to a small minimal number and type - will provide breathing room for my traditionals, and funds should I have a need for a purchase. And fits in with my 2023 general life goal of serious de-cluttering, there's too much stuff crammed into this tiny craptastic apartment. I miss elbow room, and I want it back.

2) Try to not do any traditional purchases in 2023. 🤣 (Yeah, I know, but I'll try to ignore the enablers including myself. Exception is to finish re-vamping my kitchen kit, there are a couple kitchen cutlery items I still need.)

3) Reduce my collected traditionals by about 1/3. To do that, I'll be gifting a few knives and might be running a pass-around and/ or give-away or two. The remainder on the chopping block will be trade fodder to try and acquire more GEC 14 Barlows.

And that's it. Simple, right? Just my thoughts on what I have planned for 2023.

If anyone else wants to contribute their 2023 goals/ resolutions, feel free to add. The more the merrier IMHO. :)

It's rather easy for me, I'm not going to buy another knife in 2023, or ever for that matter. No resolution needed. Good luck to de-cluttering, purging "things" can be quite a rewarding feeling, like the day I unloaded my huge vinyl collection because I never wanted to move them again. As far as sharp and pointy things go, I have several lifetimes worth of sharp steel to use. Next to go is my CD collection, I'm going to start boxing them up this week to go to a used book store or a thrift shop. my hearing isn't what it used to be. But I still appreciate a beautiful knife and sharp steel. I'm going to ship a fistful of Puukko's up to my dad in NH, he's83 but should get a kick out of seeing and handling them.
Happy new year to all and hope it's a peaceful and healthy one to all!

I backpack and travel a lot. One thing that I really wanted this year was the GEC H20 to replace my backpacking knife. I have had zero luck finding one so far and it's such a shame because I know so many of them are just sitting around untouched. Anway, it means a lot to me so I'll be searching for one until I get lucky. That and I I won't be missing out on the next BladeForum knife.

2023 knife resolutions ...

Carry my GEC's, Case, and vintage 858 OT more often?

Cut back to no more than two in my pocket (not including the SAK Mini Champ) no matter how many pockets I have?

Start to carry a 110 or 7OT and a 4 blade Scout knife or a SAK, instead of the Leatherman on my belt?

Finally pull the trigger on the Marbles Orange G10 XL 4 blade camp knife (4.25" closed) I've been holding off on for a few years?

Finally pull the trigger on the sharpening set & angle guide I've been postponing for a couple years? (not a knife so may not count.)

Not enter any GAW's? (fluked in 2021 & 2022 when a "grail" was the prize ☹️)

I mentioned it in the Forum Knife post, I plan to carry the bunny knife daily and not buy another knife until I come across one that I will enjoy carrying more.

There are a couple of exceptions - knives that I've been looking to add for some time ...
- I will continue to buy knives from Albers Cutlery when I'm lucky enough to be able to do so
- I'd like to add something with cross cut Mammoth ivory scales
- I'd like to add a vintage Case folder with deep, dark, red bone
- I'd like to add a Case Bose Coffin Jack and/or a Case Bose Eureka Jack in Bonestag

Not purchasing related, but I have an older, beat-up TL-29 that I plan to pull apart and then do my first home grown recover job.

Resolved: To stick to my moratorium on buying new knives, to sell (on the Exchange here) an early 112, and to find that pesky missing copper Otter messer.

Exceptions to above: If I do end up visiting Spain in the Spring, there WILL be knives in my suitcase coming home; I am also still working on swapping out every inox Opinel in my collector's box for its carbon counterpart.

My resolution is the same as last year:
Carry the knives that I have more, and buy less. I pretty much kept last years resolution, but occasionally things come along that I just can't pass up. Like the BF Knife, or that big sale on the Case/Bose Premium stockmans a few months ago.

Money will be going to things other than knives in 2023, with only one exception ...
I'd like to get in on the Alber's Lamb Foot when it drops but the chance of that happening is virtually nil.
After all, I have exactly zero(0) Alber's knives up until now. Other than that, I hope not to purchase another knife.
In fact, I've already posted every knife I have at least 3-10 times and may even slowly back off participation here.
... so the purchase of an Alber's Lamb Foot may even be more unlikely than nil.

Resist the FOMO.
I know what I like. I know how much I am willing to pay for it. Also, I don't 'need' the knives I have much less new knives.
So I will enjoy you all enjoying your knives.
But if one comes along that meets all my parameters, I'll snatched it up on hot second.
I like posts with photos, so here's one that screams "I have a type."

Without being too much of a chicken little it seems like almost everyone in this thread wants to back off a bit in 2023.

I backed off in 2022… bought exactly 2 knives: a nice puukko and the BF knife. Not deliberate policy but nothing released really called to me, which was awesome for my wallet, contrast to 2020/21 when almost everything I saw had my name on it lol.

In 2023 I’d like to take up whittling or carving in a real way. Dunno if it will happen but I’d like to try!

I just wished I could find a way to increase my income to overcome inflation
Bought a house just over 2 years ago (at record low interest rates ironically)
Since then EVERYTHING has cost more and more and I have less and less to show from it.

I would love to add certain sharps to my collection but also wanna add some more red wing boots and update my wardrobe some (I am 45 not 25)

So less a resolution and more a general lament :p
Growing up kinda sucks

Thanks. I've reached that point in my life I'm tired of "stuff", hate moving stuff, tired of having too much stuff after downsizing from an 1800 sq ft house to a 450 sq ft apartment... stuff needs to go. Hope you have a great year as well. :)

Good luck on your search and acquisitions!

I picked up a KME kit this year. Had been using stones and hand sharpening/ honing/ stropping, but essential tremors have made that a bit more tricky. Best wishes!

Good luck on finding what you're looking for. Would be interested in seeing your TL-29 project.

My resolution is to just to find the rest of the Buck 305 Lancers on my list.

Best wishes with your search.

Good luck with the search. Hopefully your trip happens, and is an enjoyable one.

My daughter's favorite kitchen knife is a carbon steel Pallares. The other day I saw it wet, in the sink. This year, I am going to teach that girl how to properly care for a knife. To wash and dry a carbon steel knife immediately. And how to keep them sharp.

I can't believe that I raised someone who doesn't know how to maintain a knife.
