20CV treatment by Benchmade

Hi together,

wanted to know, if someone can describe how BM actually treats its 20CV.

I want to build a Custom Griptilian. Unfortunately, for the big Griptilians there is no M4 or S90V offered (which would be my top choices).

So does BM treat its 20CV well enough to justify the higher price? I have seen a lot of reports stating that there is a lot of underperforming M390 and 20CV around.

And I know from two recent purchases (both produced in 2024), a 550 Griptilian and 570-1 Presidio, that their S30V is performing really well (tried it myself and I trust my feeling for that).

So, can you help me regarding my question how BM is currently treating its 20CV?

The other choice (besides S30V and 20CV) would be non PM D2. I only had a 710 years ago with that steel and it performed really well. It had nice edge retention (using a coarse edge as I always do).

Thanks and BR,
Oliver

All 3 of the steels you mentioned are great from BM. I had an Adamas in that D2 that was a beast. Took a really fine edge and held it like grim death.

As you know their S30V is no slouch. I had that on a Presidio and it was great. Easy enough to sharpen, no chipping, held the edge longer than other S30V knives I’ve had.

Their 20CV is worth it IMO. I have it on a Griptilian and it’s a first class EDC choice. It’s easy to sharpen, takes a wickedly sticky edge, and LOVES the strop. A few swipes gets mine hair popping again.

Don’t have any recent Benchmade 20CV knives, but I do have a 20CV bladed 940-1501 from around 2018 or so. It’s excellent.

Stated range is 59-61 HRC so they're aiming for 60 HRC. That's a reasonable hardness for a lower toughness steel like 20CV. I have the 551-1 in 20CV and it has been fine. Peterbuiltknifeguy recently hammered the same knife through a nail with minimal damage in a YouTube video. I'm not saying that's a scientific test but it was interesting to see.
