When comparing 20CV and S45VN is one steel easier to sharpen than the other? If so how big of a difference is there?

Please keep in mind I'm looking at maintaining Spyderco's factory edge and angle with a new knife; not a dull knife or reprofiling.

Tools: Sharpmaker
Knife in discussion: Spyderco Paramilitary 2

Thank you!

Not much, maybe 10-15 swipes for the S45VN, 15-20 swipes for the 20CV. As long as you're just maintaining. As long as you're not hitting the shoulders or trying to get a chip out, they're not that bad.

Gotta love the sharpmaker...spyderco factory edges are usually 17degrees and the sharpmaker does...15 and 20 lol. So if your spyderco isn't getting sharp, it's most likely you're not hitting that edge.

With the Sharpmaker in mind and with the good point you made regarding the angles, would I be better off with the S45VN for now or get the 20CV and not sharpen it until I can get the KME?

Don't worry about sharpening and get the steel you want. The sharpmaker is a more archaic but totally functional sharpening system that has a large tolerance for error, so a couple of degrees off won't kill you.

I bought an angle finder thing but find that I rarely use it, 99% of the times I eyeball it :). You'll be fine using the sharpmaker on either steel.

S110V on the other hand...ooof

Buying my first Para 2 it's really hard to decide whether to get eh S45VN or the 20CV though that I can tell you

S45VN would be my choice, given that's its cheaper and tougher. I like 20CV, but it's a little too chippy for me. Hit the edge on anything hard, it'll tend to chip which is alot harder to sharpen out. It hold on an edge forever and is almost completely stainless though.
