Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but i figured since its a peace of gear for my kit this would be a good place to ask...feel free to move it if it not.

Hey guys...I am in the market for a .22 rifle for a small game/plinking/survival rifle. I am a fairly big guy (6'2'', 230lbs). I have been leaning towards a lever action. Today I had a chance to go by a local gun store, and they had a browning BL-22 Micro Midas. It seemed like a nice little gun. It is listed as a youth model, but like I said I am looking for something on the small side. Do any of you have experience with this gun, or maybe have a recommendation as to where I should be looking.

Thanks for your time.

Best,

The BL-22 is an excellent 22 rifle. I personally find them a bit small. I prefer the Marlin 39A, or Winchester 9422 (if you can find one). Alot of people really like the Henry lever action 22 rifles. They have a very smooth action. I don't have any shooting experience with them, but I suspect they are not as well made as the Browning, Marlin, or Winchester.

My dad recently purchased a Marlin 39A for the farm, but it fired less than 100 rounds and will no longer eject the spent cartridges. He keeps saying he is going to get it fixed, but that experience has turned me away from the Marlin .22s. thanks for your response :D

I have experience with the Marlin 39A's, CZ452's and Ruger 10/22's- I have owned a number of others but I am a big fan of the three mentioned. My current catch all 22 in a STainless/laminated sporter weight 10/22 with a Nikon 1.5-4.5 Turkey plex scope. Light, accurate, nothing to fault. CZ makes a really sweet bolt action 22 & the Marlin is a classic and very accurate.

I can't say anything about the newer Marlins, but I've had a Marlin lever action fo over 30 years, and it has never failed through countless hundred rounds of every brand of .22LR that I could get my hands on at the time. Good, strong, accurate little rifle.

the Henry .22 lever guns are very well made -- and priced very reasonable.
also a big fan of the 10/22.

I have a friend that owns about a few (as far as I can tell 8 or 10) .22 rifles and in order of of what I liked (that you can still buy without a time machine) is the Ruger target .22 with laminated thumbhole stock, but it isn`t light or compact but it is a tack driver .Then the Henry lever action .22 mag with octagon barrel it is smooth and beautiful and as well made as any fine gun I have ever held but it doesn`t like some ammo more so when it was new . I have heard some bad things about marlin .22s some have jamming and feeding problems ,but they do seem to last a while and are pretty cheap. Some of the really old pump .22as are a blast and can be had for a song.

Only .22 lever actions I own are a henry golden boy, and a browning bl-22. I like them both and have never had a problem with either of them. The henry is a lot heavier though because of the octagon barrel, but they don't all have octagon barrels.

My old Win. Mod 92 22 long rifle has killed more animals than any firearm I have, it is on its second barrel and still going strong and is light and easy to pack, what more can you ask for. For those of you who are limited to choices of the modern era, all I can say is good luck. Our of the rifles of today, CZ would be my choice.

No problem. I do think the Hunting & Fishing forum is a slightly better fit. :)

Definitely read up on Rimfirecentral.com, lots of good info over there. If you're after a lever gun, I'd go with a Henry or Marlin 39A. And while not a survival type rifle per say, I picked up a Marlin 60 semi auto last year that I've been greatly enjoying. Got it used for cheap, cleaned it up, and have had zero issues at all.

I have a Marlin 39A and have never experienced any problems with it ejecting spent cartridges - nice gun - mine has the target barrel, so its a bit heavy. I have a Browning Semi Auto. Really nice gun - very compact, light weight, and very accurate. Always heard good things about the Rugar 10/22 - never had the chance to shoot one, however.

I have had a few 10/22's and got rid of all of them, with aftermarket triggers they are fine, but the factory trigger is horrible imo. While it does not have the best trigger, the Marlin 60 is my favorite .22, good capacity, accurate, and reliable. I've had one for the last 17 years with no issues. CZ's with an adjustable trigger and Savage's with the accutrigger, have the nicest factory trigger pulls I have felt on a .22 and the one's I've used have been very accurate.
I have shot a the Marlin and Henry lever .22's and while I would view the older Marlins as higher quality, the Henry's work really well, have decent triggers, and are accurate.

Yep, you have to put a couple hundred into a 10/22 to make it shoot as well and accurately as a Marlin 60. On the upside, if you want tons of options and have everything customized, you can build a 10/22 any way you want.

I've had experience with a couple different CZs and I love them. They shoot great, and the trigger is wonderful.
Here is the one I have right now.

I also have had experience with Henry, Savage, Sako, Remington, winchester, and Ruger.
They have all shot very well, but the CZ, and Sako shot the best. If you wanted a lever action I wouldn't look past Henry, they make a quality gun at a good price. I put a few hundred round through one and I loved every minute of it. Lot of fun, easy to use, accurate with iron sites, or with a cheap scope. I'm sure any of these guns will get the job done though.

Good luck

The Henry's are nice guns. My brother-in-law has one and it shoots very well. I can put a whole magazine into a pop can off-hand at 50 yds.
