Hi all fellow Forumites,

I am looking for a nice .22 LR. and optic.
Nothing too expensive. Just want to use it for plinking and dispatching the squirrel/pigeon population around my land.

Criteria - Bolt Action.
optic - something to use for plinking in the 20-100 yard range.

nothing too expensive. I dont need the Tacticool advantage polymer resin rails and such. thinking about $400 for the rifle and maybe 2-300 for the optic. That would be my top range.

Have at it. As always, thanks for your opinions and posts..

take care all.

The CZ 452 American is a pretty accurate copy of a Winchester Model 52.

 on that. I love my CZ 452 2e. It was about $250, as nice a .22 as I could want. Five shot magazine. I think they have higher end models that would still be in your budget.

CZ 452 cool.. I will check it out. $250 sounds like a deal. I like it. Thats a good price.

Any thoughts on a nice scope?

Beeman SS-3 1.5x4 (short scope). I hear they are hard to come by these days though. I had one on a Ruger 1022 and it was pretty nice. A small, tough, air rifle scope with a front parallax adjustment for the distances you mentioned.

I have one of these on my 10/22 with Millet rings.

I am pleased with it. Not so much with the rings, which were hard to install and needed to be lapped.

for a bolt action, also check out the Savage Mark II series. They now come with the Accutrigger, and are very accurate with a smooth action. I have the one with peep sights.

I picked up a 1022 at the gun show today. It has optics & a rangefinder included . Is it a pretty good weapon ? Mine has the bull barrel & is rather heavy . I have $$270 in it. Since I haven't bought the '09 gun book I have no idea of it's worth. It came with a fancy-dancy poly case with the egg carton soft liner.

Uncle Alan :)

I would also recommend the CZ rifle. Spend just as much on the scope, though. You only have one set of eyes; might as well treat them right. ;)

I like the Nikon Monarch scopes.

 Pentax and Nikon are my favorite scopes not designed by people who speak German as a first language.:D MSRP on the CZ 452 American is $463, which means you should be able to find one for under $400. If I was buying one, I would go crazy and stick a 4 x 32 fixed power Zeiss Conquest scope on it, but that would put you at around $800 for the package.

CZ 452 varmint 250-300

spend the extra on a scope, bushnell elite 4200 1.5-6 is hard to beat for the money

I also have a weaver gran slam 4.75 power, great scope for the money

Another vote for the Savage Mark II. There's a bull-barrel model that's packaged with a halfway decent scope.
