220 V tips? New Kiln set-up. I'd like to live through it.

Well, my first Evenheat Kiln just arrived. I'm going to use this one as a demo and the first thing I need to do is run 220V service out the garage. My primary shop is in the house but my wife objects to me oil quenching indoors for some reason.

I'm thinking I'll run 8-3 from a 40 amp breaker in the house - out to the garage and put another breaker box in there that I can run both 220 and 110 off of. The kiln is the 22.5 inch deep model and is rated 15 amps - 220v. It runs about 20% more power than 18" model. I'm using a 20 amp breaker for it in the garage panel because I understand you aren't supposed to use more than 80% of what the circuit is rated for. Then, I'll run 10-2 to the outlet.

Any hints on wiring, kiln placement, bench setup etc? As Alfred Einstein once said - "You may presume I have no knowledge - and an infinite capacity to learn."

Hello Rob!,

Run you wire and place your sub panel to the National Electrical Code (NEC).
My Evenheat oven sits on a cart, and gets wheeled outside during use. The cart will allow you to store your heat treating gloves and tools. Then next to the cart is the oil quenching can. No heat or fumes in the shop. I use a 30 amp dryer plug and receptacle with 10 gauge SO cord to run the unit. The heavier gauge prevents the cord from over heating and allows me to use a longer length cord. Very happy.

Alfred?!?!?

Albert's 2nd cousin thrice removed??? :D

Thanks Jeff! Great Idea with the cart. I hadn't though about the possibility of an extension cord and I can get VERY sturdy surplus carts from the university.

Dawulf - thanks for joining the legions who pointed out that I may be trainable but I'm definitely not Einstein. :o

All - I guess I should have added that the starter of this thread holds harmless - and all that mumbo-jumbo - any well meaning soul who is kind enough to offer the benefit of their thoughts or experience. :D
