I am wondering how many people carry a semi-auto in the woods (Ex 1911) that also carry a 22LR conversions so that they can shoot small game. Or is this just a waste of time, space, weight and money. (Are these even worth is in general?)

I would figure if you carry a semi auto in 45ACP for defense in the woods then a 22LR would be good for small game and as a back up. Thoughts?

I would rather carry a sepeate firearm, like a Ruger 22/45, but thats just me.

I honestly believe a good 22 pistol is one of the most valuable/usefull firearms a person can own.

I use a TON of 22 conversion for training, but not for hunting. I also prefer a dedicated 22 when in the woods. Just my personal experience, the conversions don't tend to be as accurate in my hands as the dedicated 22. Plus I have a pistol with the Pac Lite upper that weighs almost the same as a 22 conversion for a 1911.

I know you are asking about pistol, but for anyone clicking your thread looking for same info for an AR15. That same basic answer there, training yes, otherwise no. twist rate is way off, barrel diameter is off so crap accuracy. Hit & miss on reliability.

It just doesn't work in practice. Walking through the woods, see a bunny, drop the magazine, disassemble your pistol, put on the new slide and 22 conversion, reassemble, plink?

A 22 pistol is probably the first thing I carry in the woods. No grizzly around here. 22 isn't the best but I'm not unarmed against the only predator I'm likely to face, homo sapien.

I meant more as a back up system in your bag. IE lost in woods need food, change over kill rabbit, change back. But I guess that does leave one vulnerable to larger predators then if you take out of commission your defense weapon.
Hmmm... maybe just a 357mag with 38spl would be a better alternative in this case.

Either way it cant hurt to purchase one and save money at the range and just in case your out of that ammo have an alternative.

I always carry a centerfire handgun on my hip. I do carry my Ruger single six in 22 mag in my pack with 50 rounds of ammo. In a survival situation that and the snares I could make would be my way of gathering meat.

I would have to second the PacKlite upper with a Ruger 22/45 lower. The small barrel would be a great addition to any backpack. I have a 7.5" barrel on a 22/45 lower and it is very light and shoots great.

I suggest carrying two separate pistols, after all a nice Ruger MK any model .22LR will be nice, and like you said along with a 1911.

Could get a ruger convertible 357/9mm and swap out when needed to save dough, or just add a little novelty to the day with 147gr rounds.
