I am a "24" addict! Anyone else?
I do wonder (and worry) how shows like this work on the psyche of the American public. I mean, Jack Bauer is a BAAADDD man. Thank GOD he's "on our side". He is the ultimate anti-hero and we love to root for him because no matter how questionable his actions might be (and they ARE questionable) it's all for the good of the American Way and all. So when Jack tortures captives to get the info, that's all right, right?
When he kills innocent people to get the job done that's OK too, right? And when American forces torture Iraqis, Americans are willing to turn half a blind eye to that too. The trouble is, one is a TV drama where black is black and we wear the white hats. The other is real life where the areas get a bit grayer. Where even innocent teenagers get caught up in the wrong place at the wrong time and spend indeterminent periods of time in captivity.
The show is brillantly shot, directed, acted etc., but I wonder just why I wanted to let into my psyche the collective fears of all Americans, why I would wish to entertain myself with a dramatization of the worst possible events we could possible imagine.
Maybe I appreciate Jack Bauer's direct approach, his patriotism, his focus, his determinism -- he gets results. He weighs consequences quickly and acts accordingly. He has incredible passion. He is willing to suffer and even die so that we might be safe. He seems VERY real in a screwy and frightening way.
It's not that I just want comedies in my life and I don't need pure escapism. In fact I don't keep myself well informed on current events. It seems that mostly the media are playiing the song that "they" want played.
But I imagine the Jack Bauers of the world are out there, doing the things he does on "24." Maybe I don't initially agree with his methods, they usually shock me and for a few minutes I am often revolted, but then I see his logic and would like to think that I would have the balls to do what he does if the situations arose.
My name is Bill and I am a "24" addict.
