I am a "24" addict! Anyone else?

I do wonder (and worry) how shows like this work on the psyche of the American public. I mean, Jack Bauer is a BAAADDD man. Thank GOD he's "on our side". He is the ultimate anti-hero and we love to root for him because no matter how questionable his actions might be (and they ARE questionable) it's all for the good of the American Way and all. So when Jack tortures captives to get the info, that's all right, right?

When he kills innocent people to get the job done that's OK too, right? And when American forces torture Iraqis, Americans are willing to turn half a blind eye to that too. The trouble is, one is a TV drama where black is black and we wear the white hats. The other is real life where the areas get a bit grayer. Where even innocent teenagers get caught up in the wrong place at the wrong time and spend indeterminent periods of time in captivity.

The show is brillantly shot, directed, acted etc., but I wonder just why I wanted to let into my psyche the collective fears of all Americans, why I would wish to entertain myself with a dramatization of the worst possible events we could possible imagine.

Maybe I appreciate Jack Bauer's direct approach, his patriotism, his focus, his determinism -- he gets results. He weighs consequences quickly and acts accordingly. He has incredible passion. He is willing to suffer and even die so that we might be safe. He seems VERY real in a screwy and frightening way.

It's not that I just want comedies in my life and I don't need pure escapism. In fact I don't keep myself well informed on current events. It seems that mostly the media are playiing the song that "they" want played.

But I imagine the Jack Bauers of the world are out there, doing the things he does on "24." Maybe I don't initially agree with his methods, they usually shock me and for a few minutes I am often revolted, but then I see his logic and would like to think that I would have the balls to do what he does if the situations arose.

My name is Bill and I am a "24" addict.

Barb got involved with 24 a couple of years ago, its first season?
I get put out with high stress shows like that and I find myself getting really angry at all the dumb shlt that's often pulled by, well dumb shlts. :grumpy:
I also hate to get logged into a certain time once a week and then really pissed off if something happens that I don't get to watch the show for a week, or only a part of it.
It is a good show though and I asked Barbie if she was going to follow it this time around again, she didn't, don't know why not. ;) :D

I love that show. It is interesting how they work current themes into the show. Season before last? The congress removed the president from power because he refused to attack a country based on questionable intelligence. Jack saved him in the end and the attack didn't come off. Then this year I thought was a torture theme. I am not sure (if anything) they were trying to say about torture. First they tortured several people that were innocent. Then most of the info they obtained via torture did not help them. Then Jack lost his girlfriend over it. Finally they found the missle not by torture but by cutting a deal with the one lady mercenary.

Interesting show but like Yvsa said high stress. Also like that Jack uses Microtech switchblades all the time. Did you see him whip out that Halo and give it to his girlfriend?

I've seen a bit of it. It reminded me of Clancy's "Without Remorse".

I tried to sit through the entire season, really liked the episodes, but couldn't stand the constant clock, 4way split screens and that every episode takes one hour in real time. Only made it halfway.

BTW, what year does this past season take place in, I've heard that it takes place in 2010, other times that it takes place in the near future.

I hear ya. I was like that with Desperate Housewives. Caught the first handfull of episodes, then missed one. Skipped the rest because I don't know what happened prior. Now I'll need to rent where I left off. :D

I have never seen one episode, and don't even know when it's on in my area or on what channel. Is it on network TV? So many people have recommended it to me that I'm going to have to check it out at the video store and see what all the fuss is about.
