25" AK-- Initial Impressions

Well, on the way home from the convention yesterday, I got a chance to stop by the fabled HI storage shed. I knew it was a mistake as I had already spent as much as I was going to spend, but some evil little voice in my head kept urging me to go. I was almost able to resist the pull, but then Uncle Bill twisted my arm and threatened to beat my kidneys with a rubber garden hose if I didn't go. Well, what harm could it do? What could there possibly be in the shed to tempt me? Unfortunately, I saw the 25" AK almost the minute Bill unlocked the door. It was huge. It spoke to me. I kept thinking about Rusty's statement that the right khukuri will "speak" to you. I tried not to listen. I tried to cover it up with other khukuris. I could still hear the voice. I covered it up with an old sweatshirt to muffle the sound and went to look at swords. I could still hear the voice. I had just gotten to the point where I could ingore the fact that this huge beast was speaking to me when my wife pointed out, "dear, that khukuri is calling your name." Anyway, long story short, I am now Uncle Bill's indentured servant as well as the proud owner of a horn-handled 25" AK by kumar. I've not gotten a chance to use it on anything, but I have no doubts that it will perform quite well as a chopper. This thing is huge. I mean, huge doesn't even begin to describe it. It probably weighs more than five pounds. I have several blades by Sher, but this is my first by Kumar. I always though Sher made the big heavy duty blades, but this one gives Sher a run for his money. Did I mention that it is huge? Fit and finish are superb--probably the best I've seen on a khukuri so far. Amazing handle, beatiful sheen to the horn, wonderfully carved rings, beautiful blade, excellent scabbard, all around an A+++ knife. I'll post an update after I get to try it out. Right now I think I am still in a bit of shock at how cool (and huge) this thing is.

what? no pics? The 25" AK you picked out is a MONSTER...good taste, you picked or it picked a good one

Sounds like a real winner.:D

It should really help build up those arms if you need to.:D

From the sound of it, I wouldn't want to try to use it very long with one hand. I would probably have to use two hands the first swing. It probably is 5 LB. or more. Kumar is something though isn't he.:)

Don't forget = Josh is the one of the big-uns here. Top-of-the-chart, IIRC.

And if he thinks it's big...

Josh,

I have a 22" GRS ~ 3lbs. It fits me perfectly. I balked at the 25" AK at first, but now I'm reconsidering. I would be very interested in a field trip report from your point of view. Keep us posted...

were a handful. I don't think I could safely swing a 25" AK. But it's good that there are big guys to give the big khuks a good home. Enjoy and be careful.

Ok, I just my wife just got some oak firewood yesterday, so I had something to chop. The 25" AK split large pieces of oak like they weren't even there--clean foreceful chops that sent log halves flying in opposite directions. I would say that it is more effective than an axe. I can use it one handed on smaller pieces, but it's pretty tiring. The two-handed grip definitely works better, and you pretty much need both hands to generate enough force to chop through large pieces of wood. The 25" is definitely in a different realm of chopping ability altogether from say an 18" AK. I wouldn't want to have to swing it all day, but it certainly gets the job done.

Ferrous-- the shed is everything you have imagined and then some--nothing fancy, but chock full of khukuris of pretty much every variety. It was pretty overwhelming actually.

I think Josh mentioned it's big. Yup, it is. You can definitely tell it's a leaf spring. It probably still could be, except for the small wimpy sedans most people drive you'd have to cut it in half. I think I had one of the largest grip diameters in Pen's poll, and I had trouble hanging on to the handle. (of course, it was thicker around than my wrist, but that's a whole 'nother issue).

And he tried real, real hard not to listen. He even tried to drool over a 25" siru that was very, very nice. It almost made me want a 25 incher. Of course, his wife didn't seem to help very much. She seemed cheerfully resigned to the fact that their car would be riding reeeeal low on the way home. :D
