25 Notch?

Tried searching for what I'm about to ask but I'm couldn't find any results (maybe because my poor description of the notch). Anyway, does anyone know that the notch just past the thumb stud on the spine of the knife is for? It's driving my nuts that the spine is rounded all the way up to the jimping.
 
I have read that it is just used as a "transition point" between the jimping and the rounded spine.
 
Yeah, my guess is that it makes it easer to make all of the transition points the exact same on all of the blades, but that is just a guess.

Aesthetically the notch has never bothered me, but I have never handled the 25 so it might in real life.

BTW just curious is you 25 as smooth as a 21? As I mentioned I haven't held a 25 so am curious how smooth the new interface is.
