I decided to make a few purchases this week. A new Sugar Creek 24" Heat Treating Oven, 2hp Canister Dust Collector, and a 5 gallon bucket of quench oil. I love to spend $ on new toys but $262 to ship these 3 items! Granted none are light and 2 are really big but good god. 50% of that is probally "fuel surcharges"!

I know it sucks, but someone has to pay for the diesel and the trucker's wage. It's a legitimate business expense, save the receipts for your taxes.

In case you hadn't noticed, fuel is expensive. :)

No kidding. I travel 68 miles each way to work every day and stop 3 times a week for gas. As Rock stated, its not gonna get better. "The light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off until further notice"!

Ha! And here I thought, OMG! This guy has sold so many knives he's boasting about having $262. in shipping fees in one week! Whew. Guess you are still paying out like all the rest of us. I do know what you mean, though. I sent out a small knive today, insured for $400., and was surprised it cost $18. via the USPS. Shipping and paypal fees add a lot to the price of a knife, not to mention the items you've mentioned.

Shipping costs on knives going out are your client's responsibility. PayPal/merchant fees and shipping costs on tools, equipment, materials, etc coming in are your responsibility, and may be tax-deductible.

Full-time, part-time, or whatever, we all have to accept that making and selling knives is a business, and run our operations accordingly.

I totally agree with your pain... but as it has been stated gas isn't getting cheaper and wages don't go down ;)

Come up here to Canada and pay all the wonderful customs fees too! Plus the extra 1 week that is usually added to shipping times :D

I feel even worse for those in Australia!! I feel almost criminal when I have to send stuff to those guys.

And that was a flat rate box!.. Thanks again for taking care of that for me.;)

I was looking at getting the same oven and with customs fees, shipping and a digital controller, it would cost me 1k.. not that it isn't cheaper than any other oven even at that price. Shipping always sucks.

That's why I like to buy locally (when possible). Well, honestly, nothing is local for me since I have to drive 75 miles just to get to a Lowes/Home Depot/Mall. When I go to those places I take my wife's car which gets 30MPG. If I had to take my truck, it would be greener to have someone else ship it to me rather than to drive my 3/4 ton 79 Chevy 4x4 that gets 8MPG

You either pay tax or shipping. Thankfull you don't always have to pay both.
