Evening!

I tried going through and searching the forum but came up short.

I picked up a 271 Alpha Dorado for my son and I'd like to pick up some orange G10 scales.

Muskrat man does not do G10. Are there any makers out there that will do a set of G10 scales?

Order the material and do it your self. The original scales are your pattern.

I have considered that, I have the tools i think... i have a 1x48 belt sander. I don't have a respirator or any experience doing anything with G10. I don't have a scroll saw or bandsaw however.

A $10 coping saw would probably cut it and finish shaping it with your belt sander.
If you have a jig saw you could clamp it in a vice upside down and cut it out.

You certainly need a respirator. Breathing devices and air sealing goggles are a must working that stuff. I have done it and my eyes burned for day. DM

Good to know! i just picked up a scrollsaw....just had to justify it to my wallet, lol. I'll pick up some sealed goggles and a respirator as well and probably will work on that outside to keep the dust away.

Respirator seconded. I always cut G10 with my angle grinder and cut off discs. Zips through it like butter.

Got things started last night.

That g10 eats through scroll saw blades! Gotta pickup some bits tonight, and maybe a 600 grit belt to even up the edges then I will move on to hand sanding the profile. I used 120 grit to shape the G10 after cutting off as much of the unneeded g10 as possible. I also drilled out the screw holes on the drill press. 5/64ths for the screw hole and 9/64ths (i think) for the larger recessed screw pocket.

Picked up my bits tonight. I am going to use them to help "pin" the scales into alignment so I can clamp em together and sand them both at the same time. I am OCD a bit and want everything symetrical.

Looks like I am stuck until next tuesday. I need finer grit belts and wont have em until Tuesday since i cannot find a local supplier. I also needed a new set screw for my "new to me" belt sander. The old set screw hex head was stripped out. I used an easy out to remove it and then ran a fresh M6x1.0 tap through it and cleaned up the old threads and ordered a new set screw so I can level the sander table.

I got, impatient and went ahead and finished with the 120 grit belt them hand wet sanded down the edges to bevel them and smooth em over. The 1/8th inch stock is about 25% thicker than the original grips. Once the other bets arrive I will probably surface grind the top down another 25%. I also sandblasted the top of the grips with 80 grit beads to give it some texture. I may leave these thick and use the other scale for make a lower profile set, I have not decided yet. But I am happy with the results.
