Hi all, first a little background. I am a police officer and will be using this knife mostly on duty. I wanted a big, sturdy knife that can handle some abuse. I currently carry a ZT 300 combo edge and it is an awesome knife for police work. However, I really want an auto and saw the Adamas. It seems every bit as solid as the ZT and will fill my auto need (want haha).

My dilemma is what edge to get, the plain or combo? I rarely use the combo edge on my ZT, but my thinking was it would be nice to have if I need to saw through something seatbelt, plastic cuffs etc.). Maybe I am wrong in this and a well sharpened plain edge would perform just as well. I would appreciate any help and thoughts on the edge and knife in general if I am overlooking anything. Thanks!

Personally I'd get the knife plain edged, and then get one of those really neat purpose-built webbing/strap cutters. Safer to use in confined spaces with another person, like an auto wreck, maybe easier, and then you've got a consistent cutting surface on the knife you carry.

There's also the Triage, that comes in an auto as well, it's got one of those strap cutters built into the blunt end of the knife.

I am on the other side of this. Normally I prefer plain edged tools, but you guys already carry a lot of gear and the blade length would include more than enough room for the serrations. Never mind the Triage with all due respect, you need a heavy duty knife like the Adamas with the superior D2 blade IMO.

That's what I was thinking too. I already have a plain edge spyderco endura wave that I carry purely as a defensive knife. The ZT and now the adamas is and will be more of a utility, do it all type knife. How does the d2 steel compare to the ZT? Are the serrations actually useful on the adamas? Thanks for the replies

I would personally go with the combo edge Adamas, and keep it very sharp. I have been able to slice through a seatbelt in one try. I had the belt folded over. It was out of a junk yard car, but by no means rotten at all. My Rukus had a CE and man it ate 1" nylon rope for lunch!

Stay safe out there

Awesome, thanks!

I agree. For cutting rope and seatbelt, I would go combo edge. I am not police, military, or mall ninja. This is just my personal opinion.

Thanks everyone for the help, I ordered the Tan serrated version tonight. Ended up getting the knife for $122 off Benchmade's site, hard to beat that for an auto!
