2D Maglight Luxeon mod?

Does anybody make a luxeon star pill/sandwich for the 2D Maglight? I saw one on the LED museum, but I couldn't find if anybody actually sells it. I'm sick and tired of the dim Maglight, and to top it all off I dropped it and popped the bulb the other day. Time for something brighter and more durable.

Thanks,
Snow

The company you're probably thinking of is EverLED. They make a 1W Luxeon, regulated drop-in for any PR-based light. I haven't used one personally, so I can't comment on their worth.

I just did a Mag mod though - put a Luxeon III into a Mag 3D, running direct-drive, 4.5V @ about 1.5A, is driving the LED at about 6+W, and I'll tell ya, that sucker is bright, and throws like a mofo. The Mag reflector is one of the best and can make a pencil beam that throws further than just about any other. I used the "HotLips" heatsinks, which are available for $16 from a user named "Hotbeam" on CPF. It's a simple mod, takes about an hour to do from start to finish.

The throw is on par with my Tigerlight, but with a tighter beam, whiter beam, and less spill. It's also adjustable for flood/spot, and the runtime with 3D's is probably 10+ hours (although I haven't checked this yet).

Have fun!

I have one of the seconds. Ten dollars cheaper but greener. The advantage is longer runtime for a set of batteries and the bulb would never break. It still has the artifacts of an incandescent and does not throw as long as the incandescent. Overall, I like it better than the stock mag.

Hey kinzli, did you do the mod from scratch? I don't really have much electronics experience, but I can learn. Do you think it would be hard? Can you give me some decent advice/instructions?

The mod is basically a drop in as far as the LED is concerned. When you buy the heatsink, you can buy an LED with it, as I did. Hotbeam will affix the LED to the heatsink for you. The heatsink, with LED affixed, slides very nicely right into the top of the battery tube where the bulb was. There's a few mods you need to do to the flashlight itself:

- Cut back the backside of the reflector (about 1.5" of tube)
- disassemble switch so that you can solder 2 wires to the + and - sides of the switch, which will then connect to the LED

You need a soldering iron with a small tip, because the LED leads are very, very small.

Have fun!
