2HP DC Motor - Any thoughts on a controller?

Aldo was kind enough to give me a 2 HP DC motor, but I am completely at a loss on how to drive the thing off of a 110V AC outlet (or even if its possible). I know that I need an AC/DC converter, and I don't really need variable speed for what I intend to do with it at this point, but that's about as much as I know.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Let's see the spec plate

90vdc or 180 vdc ?

What do you want to use it for?

220 is more likely than 110, but maybe possible.

2 hp is big for a disc sander, ideal for a NWG

Variable speed is awesome, don't do without it.

DC controllers are relatively inexpensive, the motors are $$$

Some controllers will reverse - some won't, needed if you want it for a disc.

NEMA 1 enclosures will be cheaper than NEMA 4, but not give protection against metal dust

Most will want 220vac input and 180 vdc output for 2 hp
does it also say 180vdc?

Thanks count. I believe it does say 180VDC as well. I'll check again this afternoon when I get home.

Thanks Count - I've looked at those, but that would require installing a 220V circuit in my house (which is possible, but also very expensive). I was hoping to just get something simple in the meantime that would run on 110VAC until I have saved up for the 220V line the VS controller.

Keep looking & I wish you luck, but I doubt you will find one.

A standard 110vac 15 amp outlet should only draw 80% of it's max
12 amps

Even if you find a controller that will meet your specs of 110vac input and 180vdc output, (requiring step up voltage)
it will be over that limit and you would have to install a larger 110v circut breaker, wire and outlet.

Basically the same cost as installing a 220v circuit.

Are you sure you can't use a 220vac stove, dryer, waterhewater or electric heater circut already there? ?

Im have a lot of DC controllers. Send me a PM and we will see what we can do.

The problem is that you can't run a 2HP DC motor on 115VAC. You will need a 240VAC circuit for the load.

I might swap you a 1 or 1.5HP and a controller for your 2HP.

I could probably add it into the dryer circuit, but I'll have to go another 30 or 40 feet to get to the shop. In the end it will probably be worth it, though. I have to add more 110V 20A outlets to my current work area in any case, so maybe I'll just add the 220V circuit at the same time - it's probably not going to be that much more expensive, unless the circuit board can't handle the 220V circuit. At that point it becomes cost prohibitive, and it'll have to wait until I build my new workshop (hopefully in the next year or so).

Thanks for all your help, Count. Much appreciated!
