Cover me guys I'm going in! This combination was too good to pass up. But I don't know if it'll work. So I might be coming back for help or I wasted my money!

These are surplus 2hp Leeson DC treadmill motors for $50:

This controller appears to work for them:

Model is KBMM. Now I bought a dual voltage model from a dealer for $155 with heat sync. Someone on ebay is sellng the 120volt for $60, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=11772&item=3104689982
but you'll have to find the heat sync somewhere. (There's a dealer list on their website.)

The amperage rating is enough, but the motor is listed as 2hp and the controller is 1 1/2 at 120 input. Also the motor is 12-120 vdc 4800rpm. The controller is 0-90vdc (120ac input). So my max RPM is probably 3600.

I ordered the parts and if any one cares, will let you know if it works out. But I think I've gotten:

590-3600rpm 2hp DC motor and controller for $200

Steve

PS - it's a dual shaft motor, so I might have a 2hp variable speed buffer on the other side!

There are a couple of makers here that use treadmill motors, Bruce Evans is one. You do want to be careful, and keep the motor blown out with air, as they are open motors, and grinding dust can cause a short, if allowed to build up enough. :D

Here is another contact for surplus DC stuff.
Surplus Center, 1-800-488-3407, they will send you a catalog, if you ask.

Darn good advice about keeping open motors blown out. I make my living around electric motors of all kinds, some as high as 25hp! If you have any problems tuning your once you get it running let me know.

Thanks for the offer Higgy. You'll be the first to hear from me!

This is the first time I've ever setup something like this. There's a lot of settings for these things and I've no clue where to start.

can you make an open motor into a closed one by enclosing it in something? i was thinking about doing that myself (enclosing the entire cooling fan and motor and just leaving the shaft exposed...

any problems with doing that?

BTW, thanks for that link. that page will keep me busy for hours :)

I think there is a real possibility of overheating. Others have just slipped pantyhose over the motor ducts, as a filter. Others don't. You just have to be careful, and clean.

how do closed or sealed motors work w/out overheating then? is it because the DC motors are generally perm. magnet motors while AC's are not?
