I modeled this knife from a series of books by Robert Jordan that my brother in law and myself both read. Then I presented it to him for Christmas along with a plaque engraved with a saying from the book and a display box. This knife is several firsts for me. It was the first hidden tang-first patina-first clay coat-first blade hand forged by me. The knife is no frills, plain jane, and hefty OAL 15" The blade is just over 9" aged copper butt-cap and guard.Elk Antler handle with a purpleheart collar. Differentially heat treated 5160. If you look close you can see the temper line from the clay coating. then i treated the blade with vinegar, bleach and cold blue. Let me know what you all think, good, bad, indifferent!

Looks too big for Mat to hide up his sleeve, must be Perrin's steak knife.

It's a nice looking blade - I like the patina, goes well with the antler. Would go well with a muzzleloader / buckskinner setup.

awesome! another jordan fan! but this one was more gaul's style. thanks much for the kind words.

Looks good! I am also experimenting with clay coat and hamon. It's not that easy to make it come out and pop, like some of these guys do. It looks like you're headed in the right direction. A fine gift for sure!

Very nice work. I think you'll find that 5160 doesn't give a very good hamon. Too much manganese. I just made a similar knife and learned that my satanite coating was wasted on 5160. Having seen very similar lines on mine, I wouldn't clay coat. It detracts from the cleanliness of the blade.

I think I'm most impressed by your photo quality. The picture turned out beautiful!

dude sick blade!!!!! love the WOT series, now you gotta make the blade from Shadar Logoth. My Brother says you should definitely make a Heron-Marked Blade.

hehe , i have some definite ideas, just cant wait to aquire the skill to make swords, and get a place to forge once i move to dallas in a week.

Found it Kevin... That handle looks great! I really like the purple heart with the copper. How did you age the copper bits? I have some Elk antlers that I have been planning on using for a while, I am not sure I am ready for a hidden tang. May split them down the middle and make them into scales.

lol, believe it or not i used a paste made of egg yolk and palmolive dish soap,it has to be palmolive though due to the sulphur in it, combine that with the boiled egg yolk and its almost like clay coating the copper furniture! and as to 5160 being a waste of time hamon wise, i figured it would be, i was just after the differential heat treat mostly, was fun anyway! the paste darkens the affected areas anywhere from gray to brown to black depending on time you leave it on, i think next time i'll add a bit of water as well.
If you're after a green patina you could always use ammonia, or if you're hardcore urine! hehe. it wil also darken some on it's own afterwards. Thank you so much for the kind words.
