New Knife:
Budget: $80~
So I want to get a 2nd knife. I am looking to get another EDC Folder. I dislike skeletonization, I am a big guy and I always carry heavy stuff with me so a 7 oz EDC is not a problem. Size, however, is a limitation.

It must be under 8" when open, blade size smaller then 4.5".
Weight is no issue.
My biggest factor is edge retention, I need high HRC steel. I don't mind having to sharpen once for a few hours then sharpen many times for 10-15 minutes.
I prefer Zytel, but will do G10 scales. No metal handle please but I do want metal liners. I would prefer smoother texturing of the handle, but I am malleable.

Buying 2nd hand is fine by me.

How is the Kershaw Blur, it seems I can maybe find it for around $80~.

Blur has metal handle.
Spyderco endura with zdp189 would almost fit.
You can also look for older s60v(440v) kershaws.

go with the vantage pro by buck in s30v. if you accept natural handles go with gec cuban in big jack or moose. their 1095 & 440c are both great edge holders.--dennis

Wow totally digging the handle on the Vantage Pro. I am not digging the damn hole on the knife to flip it out though but maybe I will get over it we shall see. Hmm.. Tempting.
I am afraig GEC handles aren't for me. 1095 Carbon steel is always a

Thanks for the heads up I thought the Kershaw Blur was aluminum liner with a plastic like synthetic for the handles.

Spyderco Gayle Bradley, twilled CF handles, CPM-M4 steel at about 62+ RC. Just a hair over 8 inches and 5.5 ounces with stainless steel liners.

Well not that many new knives with a high-performance steel in that price-range. I think that Manix 2 would be probably the best choice available. Or you can see what you can buy from Exchange - but it is difficult to predict availability and prices as now, you will have to use your own judgement as the oportunities present themselves.

I think you can usually figure blade length to be 1.0" to .75" shorter than handle length. If that is true then you are probably looking for a blade length of ~3.5", with a ~4.5" handle.:)

Another vote for the manix - I have the original version and really like it. Holds a good edge and nice size if you also have gorilla hands like me.

Im sure the later version is even better with the new locking system.

I though CM154 (Spyderco Manix) had worse edge retention then SV30 (Vantage Pro).
I also forgot to mention I don't dig the thumb hole on spyderco's. I wouldn't mind it so much.
Planterz I was referring to the size of the knife when open/closed...

Uhm so far the Buck Vantage Pro looks like a fine pick so far.

Actually that vantage pro looks like a nice piece of kit for 60 bucks....

Good reviews too.

I decided to get the Buck Vantage Pro (347 large), we'll see how this knife is. I got it for $46. Now I just hope I don't get an misaligned blade, or badly placed G10 scales.
I should have it by Monday next week, or perhaps this week.

Absolutely love my vantage pro. Buck say they've fixed the alignment issue that were had early on, and if not they have great customer service. The buck vantage pro can't be beaten for the price IMO.

See if you can find a Kershaw Spec Bump around, used or blem, maybe NIB. There are some dealers on BF who might have some. I, like you, don't mind heavy knives, and the Spec Bump certainly is heavy (heavier than my Gayle Bradley, even). It has G-10 CNC'ed scales (3D, so they're really comfortable), full unskeletonized steel liners, and a recurved S30V blade. Kershaw runs their S30V really hard, so it should be a great steel for your purposes. Certainly a bit better than 154CM.

Great choice, ive had mine for about 4 months now and i love it. I think anybody who is into knives should get this knife. I think you would be hard pressed to find a knife with G-10 handle scales, a paul bos heat treated S30V blade, and the great warranty that Buck offers under $60 dollars. I did have a slight centering issue with mine but nothing i couldnt fix myself.
