The 2nd Version 110 sports a "bone hard fiber spacer". What exactly is this bone hard fiber spacer composed of? It seems like I read somewhere that it is some sort of pressed leather, but could someone please educate me on this.

Tony, This question has come up before and I could'nt remember what was said at that time so I called George Stinzel. He said it is some sort of hard fiberon material and given the year its possible for even lucite. But it was found that they deteriorate w/ time and use and the springs got sloppy. So, they were changed for metal. Hope this helps. DM

Well, hopefully it will hold up to a little blood during from a field dressing.

What I was told by the engineers is that it is a gasket making material. Its really more of a paper product than anything else. When it tears, it acts like paper would.
I'm not sure why they tried it on the 110 but it was already around the plant since it was being used as handle spacers for the 100 series fixed bladed knives.
FYI we changed from that bone hard fiber to red micarta in late 1969 because they wanted to try a tumble finish operation on the 100 series FB knives. They felt that the fiber material might not do well in the wet climate of the tumbler so they started using micarta. We did not stick with the tumble operation but we never switched back to the hard fiber.

Are you seriously going to use this knife? A version 2 needs to be on a shelf and admired. just sayin....:D

Are you kidding? It looks like it has never been used. It needs to live a real knive's life.

I guess this just cornfuses me, Dave. A collectible potentially worth 50 to 75$ to a collector, probably more for one with the fiber spacer, when a new one at Wally is still about $27 drive out. But yeah, if you were specifically going for the 440 steel.......

but in my old age, I do stay cornfused a lot. just ask my daughters... :o Then they made a raid on the big toy box just to make sure I hadn't sold off "THEIR" guns...... geeze.... at least they don't know much about the knives.... now I am babbling incoherently.... see...old age sucks...:grumpy:

well P'Rat it was not as it seemed.. the tip was broken and had been converted to a minor tanto look by some one else.. so all i did was use belt sander and bring the clip down to good edge and try to shape it so it looked close to factory... the hole in the rear bolster made it one of those things that...
well it was really in poor "collectible" condition and not worth collectible money..
i think i paid like 15$ for it ... the scales were 13$ with shipping from buck

i did not take a prime condition knife and chop shop it ..
rather i took a chop shopped knife and made it look better
and the 440 C is still good... it took several hours to polish it up..
wrist were hurting real bad so i did not sharpen it
as i could not hold a steady angle ...
but it will take an edge as it was sharp when i started..

i had bought it as a user and i did use the snot out of it cutting tree roots, wire, and general things you would not want to do with a Nice Knife..
so put your name in and give it a spin!
ya cant hurt it none !!!

yea i know getting old in the head ... of all the things i mind missing,i miss most my mind.

ahhhhh,,,,I guess somewhere along the way, I missed the detail. Makes sense now. Thanks Dave.

so ... ya going to try it out?
would love your thoughts on the old 440C! ;)
and thats what it was made for ..

Thanks Dave, but we are gearing up to migrate to the hunting camp for a while. So will be gone from here. and I did try the first one. Love the rubber.

Maybe I will dig through the box and sharpen up a 440 to field test. but this year, I am going to concentrate on using the new fijii orange beegee.

Thanks,
LarryH
