Like most Schrade collectors I do not have a 2OT in my collection. This morning I see one for sale on ebay. I know it will go much deeper than my pockets, so I would like to call every one's attention to the the history the seller included in his auction. He even quotes a letter he received form Schrade regarding the 2OT. I do not know if it is correct or not, but I would like to call attention to it so that we can discuss it.

Does anyone know the facts around the history of this knife? Codger? Anyone?

Thanks,
Dale

Dale,
sent you a message. I'll post the historical particulars tonight when I get home if Michael hasn't gotten to them by that time.. I cant see e-bay from here so I cant comment yet.

Dale,
I just looked at the Ebay listing and the details look correct. Looks like a Debbie Chase letter to me. She was doing all of the Schrade customer service at about that time. Miss her!
I'll post the 2OT history on the web site shortly. I have been working on it for a while.

2OT
P.S. My copy of the 2OT. Check out LT's corner for his 2's and 8OT's in the original bone. (they didnt make em in bone for long!)

OT beginnings

Schrade held an annual sales meeting during the later part of November or the 1st 2 weeks of December for many years. They produced volumes of printed material for these meetings that were given to everyone whom attended. There were usually about 100 or so salespeople and staff in attendance.
It was in a copy for the 1959 Sales Meeting handout that I found a page on the upcoming new addition to the “Pocket Knives” offered.
During the 11/1958 sales meeting for the upcoming year, Schrade Walden announced the beginning of a new “Old Timer” series of knives. Reaching back into their history using a pattern that fit the hand, was sturdy enough for tough duty but handsome in its presentation.
The 2OT was the 1st in the series and was made available for 3/1959.
The following year at the sales meeting the 8OT was announced and added to the line and was made available for 2/1960. Later that same year the Ulster 58OT was added followed in 1961 by the release of the Ulster 50OT.
The history of the rest of the OT patterns is yet to be uncovered.

The predecessor of the 2OT was in the 1930’s catalog having SCHRADE across the bottom bolster where the the 2OT had OLD TIMER.

I still have no idea why the company ran 2 separate lines of “Old Timers”.

Thanks for the info Larry. That is great stuff. I wish they had made more of the 2OTs though. They are a bit hard to find.

I was thinking about it, but was going to wait till everyone else had a chance.
This being what it is, may go for a lot and I would only put in my box as I don't have a place to display it.

Looks like Phil has the high bid right now, but "reserve not met".

I have also seen and owned the 2OT pattern made for Sears - no Old Timer markings but an oval CRAFTSMAN shield, IIRC. I am not sure of the tang marking but again IIRC it was Schrade Walden not CRAFTSMAN.

Thanks for the history, Larry! And the pic of your 2.
Phil has aced me out (for not nearly enough to buy that knife I'll wager). I wonder what it will go for? Probably over $200 I guess. It sure is nice looking, and a milestone piece. I'm lucky enough to have a predecessor here, a Cut. Co. but in wood handles, and a different main blade.

I wonder if my poor credit card can stand another hit??

Steve,
Ive seen a picture of the Craftsman 2OT with the word Craftsman on the bottom bolster. I think it was in Sargents book. I believe LT has one in his collection (believe it or not!)

Well I watched the 2OT Proto auction down to the wire and our own Waynorth won out in the last 10 seconds. Congratualtions Waynorth! It's a great looking knife and a really rare one as well, I am told.

Paul

I watched that too. What an exciting auction.................I think I need a life.

Thanks! And gulp!
It's amazing what a nice knife will do to a grown man (and his credit card!). I won't be buying any expensive knives for a while!
Will post better pics when it gets here.

I am so glad someone here won it. Congrats:thumbup:

Congrats Waynorth, you timed that just right! I have to admit I'm pretty envious, though I did snag two knives off the Williams collection that no one was bidding on cause they were all watching your auction. I think the entire knife collecting community had their eyes on that one, 319 hits! From what I've seen, your collection of mint older Schrades is nothing short of fantastic.
Again congrats
Eric

Waynorth,
I picked up a S. Cut. Co. Bone whittler

PS I couldn't have had a harder time uploading these images to tinypic, it took me all day!
