What’s up fellas. I’ve been a lurker here for a while but finally getting around to building my grinder so I figured I’d start a build thread to have a place where not only I can ask you guys questions, but anyone else in my boat can also gather info and use any thing I may be able to provide.

Atm life is extremely hectic, so this will probably get drawn out longer than I would hope, but it is what it is. I’ll get it finished when I can.

To start with, Stacy was very generous and hooked my up with a 1hp 3phase 56c motor that I’ll be using. He’s been very helpful in general in my short time here lurking and trying to gather info. Thanks Stacy!

I started with .dxf files from Kevin’s build thread, and planned on just building the same grinder he built, but my metal man uses a laser to cut material. And apparently he couldn’t cut such small holes in 1/2” thick stock, with the laser. So I began to modify them to be more of a weld together design and be built with 1/4” thick material instead. If everything works out correctly, and kevin doesn’t mind, I’ll gladly post the .dxf files here as well so anyone else can use them. I don’t wanna post them until i know it works bc I don’t want anyone jumping the gun and having a bunch of parts cut that won’t work. Haha

So far, I’ve got the main frame tacked together and just recieved my wheel kit from origin blade maker and tensioner pulley hinge from Amazon.

Next order of business is to start tapping holes and figuring out how to get all the wheels on same plane so it’ll track properly, I guess. Also need to figure out what size bolts and bushings/spacers for axles.

(also, I have a few pics ready to share. Thought I’d just post them here. But can’t figure out how to do it from my phone?)

Sounds like you're making progress - be sure to figure how to post photos. We'd all like to see the progress as you build.

Well, I was going to find a thread with detailed into on how to post photos, but didn't turn up what I was looking for. You'll have to use a hosting site, I prefer https://imgbb.com/ for FREE hosting, but https://imgur.com/ works "ok". Upload your photo to the site, then click on photo to get full size. Along the bottom of screen there is a menu, press "C" on the keyboard to bring up the dialog box with the photo showing and "Viewer Links". Click on the Viewer Links to show a selection of choices, select the "BBCode full" option and a link that looks like this (with no spaces)
"[img ]https:/ /i.ibb.co/k3bF g33/Billet.jpg[/img]"
will show, copy 'n paste that link into the post and you'll get this:

I think 1/4 would be fine, however I'd avoid welding.

The beauty of the bolt together design is no welding.
Welding is warping.

Have your laser dude mark the hole centers with the laser, you drill them out with a drill press.

Parts are already cut and partially welded together, so we’re rolling with welded. I took my time and tried to spread out the heat. So we’ll see. I also didn’t wanna have to bore that many holes on my cheap single speed drill press.

I’ll try to host the images later tonight after I get the kiddos down and get them posted.

Warping while welding shouldn't be an issue since you're taking care to spread the heat by only welding short beads, and welding both sides of the bracket.

Looking forward to the photos.

Got a bunch of holes tapped and bought some hardware and got a lot of it mocked up today. Tapped the D plate holes crooked so my metal
Guy is gonna cut me another one and tap them for me at his shop.

Uploaded the images to imgbb and tried to post them here but I’m still getting an error message. Does it just not work with the phone? Do I need to take time to get on the computer and do them? Or is there something else I’m doing wrong.

Kids spent the day at the grand parents today, so I was able to get a little bit of work done.

Had to rig up some scrap material to make the tracking hinge work. Wouldn’t have been so bad, had I bought the hinge before I had my metal parts cut. Could have simply put the .201” hole higher on the tension arm, since I wasn’t using the hinge in Kevin’s original design. But with switching everything to .25” material, and ordering a tracking hinge online, I forgot to account for that. I ended up having to come up with a solution. (Please Remind me to change or note this, when I post the .dxf files)

Have a few photos. Hosted them to Imgur. But every time I post the link, I get an error message saying “image cannot be loaded from the passed link.” I know I had issues last time, but eventually got it figured out. I feel like an old man not knowing how to work technology atm, though. I can’t figure out what Ike doing wrong.

Pictures will be visible, just post the link. I had the same problem in my diy press thread, the same error message. Just try.

When you open the image in Imgur it should look like this:

See the BBCode link that's in green? Just copy that link and paste into the post. Image should show up.

I’m using the app on my phone instead of the website. Believe I was trying to use the link to the post which included all 3 images. Ends up working if I use the individual links to each photo.

This is the backer I ended up having to use to extend the hinge plate to make it low enough that the adjustment screw would actually make contact.

I forget that some folks are trying to do internet stuff on their phones. To an old man like me phones are for making phone calls - and taking photos as good as the camera is these days. A desktop computer (notebook in a pinch) :) is for internet stuff. I like a mouse and keyboard - and I do remember when I had no use for the new fangled contraption called a "mouse" :)

Looks like you're getting close on the grinder now - congrats. We're looking forward to your first grinding with it. You gonna be impressed :)

Thanks. Next order of business is to get a spring/air shock. Then get some belts otw to make sure I have the tracking fine tuned. Then it’ll be vfd and wiring time, I guess.

I was originally thinking spring just to keep it simple. But the way the arm is offset to the left side, it seems simple enough to mount a gas strut from right side kf that, to the top of my tool arm slot, if that makes sense.
