I’ve carried around a rather dinky swiss army knife for ages, but I’m really interested in getting myself a proper EDC. Due to local law, it needs to be a folding blade less than 3 inches. I’ve been doing some research and found some solid looking 2.9” folders by manufacturers such as Kershaw and SOG, but I’m having a tough time deciding on a point design between drop, clip, and reverse tanto, as all three seem to be popular general purpose styles. If anyone has their own folding EDC preference they’d like to weigh in with (or even a specific knife) I would love to hear it- cheers and thanks in advance for reading.

If you're using them for simple EDC tasks, I doubt you'll see much difference. Out of those three, I'd say the drop point is the most "general" purpose EDC style. I personally prefer a clip because I like the acute tip and sex appeal (the knife...).

If you're looking for a good all-arounder, I'd point you to the Civivi elementum. Lots of different configurations and steels to choose from.

Good luck!

Just get the one that looks best to you. Some knife people claim a reverse tanto or wharncliffe is easier to use since you don't have to angle the knife to use the tip, but it hardly matters.

For general use you cannot go wrong with a drop point
However in general everything can be used
On small blades I like drop point, reverse tanto and wharnies
I like tantos but in general I prefer to have a tanto on larger blades (>3”)

Also don't call SAKs dinky, you might upset certain people like EngrSorenson EngrSorenson

Haha, I would never dare besmirch the handiness of SAKS, but mine really is a cheap little thing that I probably got from a souvenir shop or something. Thanks for the feedback!

Quiet Carry Drift is a wonderful EDC. Sypderco LilNative is great too (particularly in upgraded steel). There are others but those are a good place to start.

I couldn't have said it any better than this.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the obvious- get one of each and decide for yourself. I like all three types personally. Let us know what you decide to get.

Clip is a classic choice.

Personally I prefer a tanto with a drop point and slight belly curve. It provides 2 rather distinct tips and cutting surfaces. It combines the best of all designs and gives users a true multi use blade. My go to right now is CRK small inkosi, that or the small sebenza would fit your size requirement.
