was looking at a knife description today ... once again I saw 3 1/5 th as the length of a knife...
1/5 th ...
wondering , seen 1/5 used before ...
but finally have to ask myself and ask outloud .... WHO CAME UP WITH THAT UNIT OF MEASUREMENT ?
I have been at wood n metal cutting for a long time....
can use a ruler or a Mic'
tenths too 1000's no problem ...
THINK ... it is a measurement they came up with too CONFUSE somehow...
let it out , how do you really feel ...

How about an overall length of 7.75" and a blade length of 3 1/5? :) Let's mix up those measurements! Oh, and blade thickness 2 mm ...

Maybe they feel that more people can relate to a fraction of a length then a decimal equivalent. 3 1/5 vs. 3.200 But that's just my 1/20 of a dimes worth.

I don't get it. It's either 3.2 inches or 32mm. Why does it bug you so much? If you can do tenths then it's a non issue.

Some places have a maximum legal carry blade length of 3 1/2 or 3 1/4, so if you went with a 3 1/5 it would be pretty easy to demonstrate you were carrying a legal knife... other than that... who knows?

As a guy that has ridden a lot of older British motorcycles and still owns a Triumph I've had since 1976, I'm thinking this was some type of Whitworth adaptation.

Yeah that's a bit mixed up . Obviously it means 3.200" but usually if you switch that over to a fraction you'd do it to a unit of measurment that you'd normally see on a scale . Instead of putting it as 3 1/5 they should have put it as 3 13/64 . 1/5 is .200 and 13/64 is .203

if you think fifths are confusing make shure you get your next gas grill assembled at the store and not have to deal with the english converted chinese assmebly instructions.

Maybe they were using an engineer's scale. They are typically in divisions of 10ths. As parbajtor said, 2/10 ths too complicated for some people.
