I just ran across the chance to buy 2 sheets of black 3/16" thick 12"x48" for a little over $30.

Is there much use for 3/16 thick material aside from folder scales? Wouldn't it be too thick for liners and too thin for scales?

I want to buy it, but don't want to waste the money on something I won't use

I use plenty of 1/8" on scales for fixed bladed knives as well as 1/4" just depends on what I want, sometimes thin is what you are after. 3/16 would be a nice in between and probably save a fair bit of material removal.

You could laminate it with a contrasting 1/16" piece and have cool lookin' 1/4" scales. Heck if you don't want it let me know your source, I might snag that up myself.

At closer look on the auction site, the description is "PHENOLIC 3/16" THICK XX BLACK PAPER BASE MATERIAL 2PCS 12" X 48" ALL AT ONE TIME IN THIS SALE # 1903".

With it being XX Phenolic, I guess it is paper micarta?

I mostly use 1/8 and 3/16" stock for full-tang knife scales. It can be used for spacers and maybe even a back spacer in some rather large folders. There are some folks out there who make G10 knives and tools as well. It's cheap, if you don't buy it then I'll take it if the shipping is reasonable.

Yep paper micarta.still a good deal,I use alot of 1/4" and still remove material so 3/6" should be fine.

Didn't see your reply - yes, it's paper micarta. Still good for handle scales and particularly good for spacers and caps. Black paper will smooth up and polish out really nicely.

Also if you don't want it all,I'll buy a couple of sq.feet from you.

I went ahead and got it but they still have this "(1570) PHENOLIC BLACK XX PAPERBASE 13" X 48"" that is also 3/16 if anyone else is interested

and by "they", I mean THEY

Jawilder, I'd be interested in a 2 square ft. also if you or anyone else wanted to share:)
