3.25" or Less

Folks on this forum tend to talk about a 4" blade limit like it is universal. It has been my experience that 3" is closer to an actual universal limit for blade length. Frankly, if traveling across state lines, I try to keep a folder 3" or less on person to be on the safe side. bearing that in mind, I want to propose a conjectural situation: suppose a natinal blade limit of 3.25" were enacted; what would be your favorite carry piece? Assume that this limit would be strictly enforced.

Small Sebenza, all the knife you will ever need.

Yup, Small Sebenza is a good choice,
Darrel Ralph's Small Apogee would also fit the bill, and be a sweet looker to boot!

This looks like the cleverly disguised "what's your favorite small folder" thread.

I'd go for a small sebenza also, however, I'd also consider the Wegner Jr. a very close second.

Nice one Will. I'm definitely LMAO. At least we're talking 3.25" folded.

ince i started this thread, I will say my current smallfolders are: large Wiiliam henry Spearpoint,
Calypso Jr. Lt. Wt., 440V Native, if i want something a little larger, I go for my Kershaw Avalanche (3/18" blade but 7.5 OAL). I started this thread because as much as love big folders, I think that knives with OALs of 6.5-7.5" are really about as big can be open in public without scaring the crap out of non-knife people. Even then it doesn't hurt to carry a Ladybug or Umfaan or something when one is around hypersensitive types

The answer is the small Sebenza or the Umfaan.
If you don't want to spend that much, the BM 330 or 705.

Without question the BM705S (partial serrated).

Here in Virginia, where the cops wear the glasses with the mirrors on the inside, the police use a folded dollar bill to determine if a blade is too long. They start at the handle jucture and if the point of the blade extends past the edge of the folded dollar bill, then you could be in a "heap o trouble, sonny" or something stereotypically Virginian like that.

Professor,
As well as being a LEO down here in Hampton I am also an instructor at the accademy(police) and I have never heard of measuring the blade with a dollar bill.I know I always teach the correct way to measure a blade even thogh it's not a part of scheduled training. If you get a chance to go by a Magestrates office have them give you a copy of VA.Code 18.2-308 it's about four page's long. It should answer any questions about knives/possession while in the Commonwealth.

Bronco--
Folded? Ouch. Usually more comfortable just to wrap onto a spool.
Makes me wonder if Viagra has been tried as an integral locking device yet. If you can get your blade work done in under an hour...

Will: Great one !

Small Sebbie for me, too though I just have the large right now.

Bladerunner,
It was just a little folklore. I was told by an LEO in Ashland, Va. that the folded dollar bill did have it's place since it measures a little under 3.5 inches folded and there is so little consistency with the ways LEO's enforce blade laws in Virginia. The officer told me the dollar bill trick was a good rule of thumb that would keep one on the right side of the fence. I've heard the dollar bill thing my whole life from hunters in my family sweating toting their Buck 110's and so forth. Doesn't really matter if it's true if enough people (including some LEO's) believe it.

Thanks for the statute info. I've been meaning to pick that stuff up for the sole purpose of having it handy should any problems arise. We should have a legalities forum here, you know? Professor.

Do not rely on your local law enforcement to know the laws pertaining to blade lengths... Unfortunately, even in the LEO community there are old wives tales which are long lived about knives and their lengths. I took an edged weapons defensive class last year. Everyone was either a current or future LEO. About half had wrong impressions of the state law pertaining to knives...

What you should do is find out the state and the municipal laws which apply to you. Why municipal? Lets look at Colorado, where I live-> The state law allows for 3.5 inches. There are several municipalities in the Denver metro area which prohibit knives over 3.25 inches in length. You can and will be prosecuted for carrying an illegal weapon if the officer or DA calls for it. Quoting of the state law will get you nowhere fast.

Combat Talon 2 customized with .23?" ground off the end of the blade to comply....

Just kidding, small Sebenza.

Hey, no one said it had to be a folder! Just that it had to be ridiculously small.

anthony,

I'd like for us (AKTI) to push the 4" limit as the standard length for a pocketknife (folder). This is the limit the FAA allows, and I can't think of any more close quarters than an airplane.

Anyhow, for your question, I'd go with the BM Mel Pardue 720 Axis or the Mini AFCK in M2 Steel.

I am going to be original and choose something that no one else has chosen............................the Small sebenza
