I havent been here for a while, but I found something that may interest other members. I thought it would be nice to have some smooth steels that would fit in the Spyderco Sharpmaker. A quick Google search told me I needed 3/8" rods. Another turned up these: http://www.thebestthings.com/newtools/scraper_burnishers.htm (top one):

I was thinking one could get some 3/8" O1 drill rod from Fastenal, cut it to the length you need, harden it up in a one-brick forge and some oil, and polish it in a drill chuck. Heck, you might be able to make a couple sets and sell them off to recoup your costs!

You might check someplace like MSC or J&L for 3/8" drill or reamer blanks.
They should be smooth enough and already hardened.

they would need a triangle base to fit the sharpmaker........maybe you could weld a steel rod to the bottom part of some used up diamond triangle rods.

I just checked, a 3/8" rod will fit into the Sharpmaker base with little slop.

I use a 3/16" stelight (spelling) welding rod fitted into a file handle .:D

Is there an advantage to having the steel at a particular angle? I didn't think it mattered (but I really don't know.)

All I know is I got the rods and they work great with the Sharpmaker. They fit nice and snug into the Sharpmaker. Now I have Medium, Fine and Super Fine stones and smooth burnishing steels for my sharpmaker.

The steel probably doesn't have to be at 40 degrees, but it certainly doesn't hurt any. It also makes for very convenient edge maintenance--I just leave the steels in place unless I need the stones.
