Okay, another file knife. While working on another knife made of 1084 I got frustrated and decided I would grind something out that is a bit smaller and easier. Thus, an 8 inch overall length Tanto. Same handle idea as the last one, paracord and leather. This one came out perfect as far as my pathetic heat treat set up goes. The edge is sharp, VERY sharp, and stays that way. Some scratches showed up from my mistakes but I will finish that up later, gotta catch a plane to Southern California.

Tell me what you think!

I'm not a fan of the American style tanto but I like this one.

Hey Robert,

Great Knife. My primary suggestion would be to try and not wash out the lines where the bevel meets the flats. This type of knife really begs for crisp lines. Sweet wrap.

I agree about the washed out lines, otherwise, very nice. Good job!

Nice job. I did see a few things that yo can work on.

The first thing I saw was the rounded bevels and washed out line. Here is a trick that looks great on tanto style knives.

Grind the bevels and hand sand to flat and clean. Make the edge bevel a bit short of where you want it to be. Buff /sand the upper bevel until it is at the finish you want.

Tape the upper bevels off with duct tape, placing the edge where you want the bevel line to be.The stainless steel air conditioning tape works even better, but you have to be careful or it can cut you.

Go back with your hand sanding block and 120 grit paper and bring the edge up to the tape. Make it as flat and cleanly sanded as you can. Switch to 220 and then 400 grit. Take off the tape and clean up the blade. This gives a two-tone finish to the blade with super crisp bevel lines. I personally don't mirror polish the upper bevel, but instead take it to about 2000 grit.

The tsuka-maki looks nice. Looks like you used para-cord with the core pulled out? Next time ,try ito, and make folds instead of twists. Hishi-game will help keep the folds from pulling out into twists. This will give a much sharper diamond pattern.

Thanks Stacy, I will try that next. I have been wanting to get some Ito but just haven't done it. I think I will now. I was trying to get the Paracord to fold but it didn't want to.

Thanks again guys.

Oh, and any suggestions for where to get Ito?
