My 16 yr old son and I will be going on a 3 day weekend hike/camp/scout to look thhings over for spring turkey season.
Not a large area maybe 6 miles x 4 miles.
Weight doesn't seem to be a concern, not a big area and 3 days to check it out.
What "fun stuff" type gear would you take?
Other than rations, first aid kit, etc, what extra stuff can't you leave home without??

If you have them, maybe a pair of NVG (Night Vision Goggles). Not necessary but can be fun to play with.

A map and compass to practice locating your position and navagating.

A star chart.

Different types of firestarters to try out.

Some 550 paracord, of at least two different colors, and a book of knot tying. You can print out the information you wish from here, if you don't want to take a book:

Here is a site which has knots as well. In particular, this shows you how to make a belt of 550 paracord, which can be unraveled in a few seconds so that the paracord can be used:

Hope this helps, Walt

It may be a little extra weight but two or three good plant books would be good for plant identification in your area. By identifying one or two each trip you will soon get to know most of the edible ones in your neighborhood and the best thing is the library is FREE

. Take care.

Peterson's Field Guide to Edible Wild Plants

A small star chart for finding the different constellations.

A harmonica or flute.

A small penknife for whittling.

My favorite: a good field guide to birds.

Hoodoo

The low, hoarse purr of the whirling stone—the light-press’d blade,
Diffusing, dropping, sideways-darting, in tiny showers of gold,
Sparkles from the wheel.

well I still suggest this even though the scout master broke his ankle on the way to summer camp: A frisbee

I still like mine

laser pointers are still alot of fun in the woods for long distances just to see how far they go.

I wish I had night vision goggles

I'm heading ot our farm over the next couple of weeks to do the same thing..I love spring turkey season. I don't feel the need ot camp, and its only 30 minutes from the house, and we have a weekend house out there, but I will spend a good bit of time snooping around the woods.

First must have item...Binoculars. I don't like the small 'super compact models' since they are hard to hold still and don't do a good job under poor light. Something with 40mm objectives or bigger are 'poor man's' night vision.

Something a little bigger than a 'small knife'. I will be building some 'pre-positioned blinds, and a machete[my old Tramotina] or some other 'big blade' that I'm currently testing is in order. Probally a BK&T BRUTE at this point<G>.

Bio-degradable surveyors tape...in case I want to mark something I find...or mark a trail for others. But since it will rot in short order, I don't permantly mark -up my farm.

A pair of light tinted sunglasses. I wear contact lenses, and with spring comes pollen and all kinds of crap in the air. I wear OAKLEY M Frames that 'wrap around' your face. I will put in one of the light yellow or orange 'shooting lenses' and wear them almost all the time. Keeps crud out of my contact lenses sensitive eyes, especially riding the 4 wheelers, but also just walking through the woods.

Always take 550 cord.

I always take a firearm, but hey, its my property. Side note, I believe I would take one anyway, my dad is currently taking the RABIES shots for exposure to a rabid 'coon. He is not a happy camper. Rabies is really on the increase here in South Carolina, be careful. Since I carry a .45 everyday[CCW], I just carry the same thing in the woods. Unless something specific in in season and I'm hunting, then the .45 is not needed.

Oh yeah, take your Turkey calls,....you'll have alot of time to practice

Thats what I can think of off the top of my head, but my situation differs from yours.
