Hello everyone,
Fairly new to blade forums my question is the 3 dot Buck go further that 1980-81?
Michael Szczepanski

Generally with Buck you add a safety cushion of a year or so either way.
I just call them 1981 and figure some were probably made in 1980 and ran into 1982.

Welcome to the Buck forum.

Welcome Michael to the Buck Forum. Agreed ^. I lean more toward 81-82. Is your model radiused? DM

Would some one please post a photo or a link showing the dots. I have a 110 from the late '70s or 1980, I bought back then brand new from the hardware store, that I would like to look for dots on. I never noticed any.

Your photo is not very good, so I couldn't zoom in to see what your tang stamp reads.
Buck didn't use finger grooves on a 110 until the 4 dots which came right after the 3 dot 110s. (Oddly enough, Buck started the finger grooves on the 3 dot 112s)
Your knife itself has a radiused frame, but looks like the thumb press part of the frame is not which would date it probably about 1982-1983.
If the frame in the thumb press is radiused, then more likely about 1984-1985 manufacture date.

Here is a 3 dot...1 dot left of the "110" stamp on the tang and 2 dots to the right.

Stumps,

Thank You :)
Mine is definitly a four dot.

The 4 dots had 425M steel
Now I'm depressed. I was hoping for the 440C. :(

I thought sure mine was older but I guess there is no doubt at all what with the dots and the finger grooves.
I guess it has been too long and I don't recall when I bought it but I thought I had it before I moved to my current town and I moved here in 1981. Oh well. It is still a hefty, quality knife. ;)

PS: I do have the black belt pouch. An absolute must for this big, brass, bad boy. Carrying it in my pocket is like carrying a hammer head in my pocket.

PPS: what hardness range is the 425M Buck blade ?

Great thread and great info. Got my 110 from my dad back in 1976 I'm thinking. Just looked and it has two dots. One on each side of the 110 stamp. Still have the black leather sheath and do carry it every now and then for old times sake.

The date of manufacture of your two dot from around 1976 could be nailed down better by the number of handle pins and their size.
Earlier manufacture (1974-1975) could have just two small pins and the rocker bar rivet.
In about 1976 Buck was in another transition with the two dots and added two more small rear handle pins. They used all the holes in the sintered brass frame for a short while which ended up giving the knife four small handle pins and the rocker rivet.
The in late 1976 (about) and through 1977, Buck used three small handle pins and the rocker rivet.
A lot of those 110s with the three small handle pins still had the hole for the fourth pin in the frame, but it was not used.
The 1978-1979 two dot 110s have three larger handle pins and the rocker rivet.
Then came the three dots after that.

Always remember that the years are approximate as manufacture changes at Buck are done at any time during the year, not just at the start of the year.

Those older leather sheaths rode nice and low on the belt. My favorite of all the 110 sheaths made.

I have pretty much given up on the belt sheaths for 110 carry now and gone just about exclusively to pocket clip carry. (I add my own pocket clips)
That one thing made a huge difference for me in the amount of time I carry a 110. I LOVE the pocket clips and the 110 carries very well that way.

If you want 440c there are many on ebay just look at ALL the pics. Find one that hasn't been broke or ground to nothing, Yes they are there but sometimes takes a while to find.

I have many 3 dot and all seem the same visually. What would nave a radius ?

Radius is pertaining to the frame edges.
A radiused frame is more rounded on the edges starting with the four dot 110s of about 1982 and on to the present model 110.
All three dot 110s are of the more squared, stocky type frames.
Some people (like me) prefer the older stocky squared type frames, but lots prefer the rounded edges of the newer radiused frames.

Awesome!!! Yeah this one has the three pins with the rocker pin and when i look inside the frame i cant see any unused holes. I was 13 years old in 1976 when i got this knife and am glad i still have it.

The 3 dot 112's were when the radius frames started showing up. Then later on the 4 dot 110's. Finger grooves showed up at this time too. DM
