I'm looking for a new folder w/ a blade under 3". The key is that it must be lefty/ambidexterous, a plain blade, and under $180(MSRP). I don't care for spine locks, much. I currently have a BM 710SBT and a BM 812SBT (lefty). I love my Benchmades, and I'm considering the BM 705, but I want to possibly spread my proverbial wings a bit. I don't like the looks of the Delica (that hump just doesn't appeal to me), and I can't find a price for the Centofante. Custom knives are out of the question (If I go custom, it'll be for a sword). Any suggestions?

Doubt you could go wrong with the BM705.... Where else do you find a knife that is ambidexterous, with truly solid construction and one of the best locks in the industry.....all for under $100?

BM 705 (plain).
It's hard to buy a smaller version of a knife you allready have. You know what will make you happy...
What ever you get, you will compare it with that BM 705 you could have had. BM 705 (plain) my vote, make your self happy.

Well, it's already been said a lot, but I will also cast a vote for the BM705. The Axis lock is amazingly smooth to open (the engagement of the lock is barely felt, but it rock solid). On mine, the grind are slightly off, but so slightly that I had to stare at it for a long time to notice it. Like any Benchmade, you will have to sharpen it, but you'll have to do that sooner or later, no matter how sharp it is in the box. And the only knife handle that I've held which feels more solid would be a fixed blade.

Without a doubt, I'd go with the 705. Something to consider is your familiarity with the 710. Since the 710 works the same way, your hand doesn't have to learn a new way to open the knife.

I've got three and it is my favorite knife.

I'm a lefty myself and I "spread my wings" so to speak last year. I bought about 80 knives (BM, Spydie's, Busse, a few othrs), most of them after I'd bought my 3 705's. Guess which one is always in my left front pocket?

Whatever you look at, use the 705 as the standard to beat.

Thanks for the link over to KnifeForums, CenterCross! I haven't been over there since their performance problems last year.

Another vote for the 705.

The only thing that can beat it is a small Left Handed Sebenza with dual thumb studs and that's more than $180.

I will have to throw in my two cents and agree with the 705, It is a definate winner! It is likely to be in the pocket during casual wear, not very threatening but quick to access and it is a blast to "flick" and if it gets lost it is not as scary as the small wood sebenza getting away!

wow. Not one recommendation for any other brand (I'm not counting the Sebenza since it is indeed out of my range)? I was sure someone would recommend a Spyderco or something that would fit my needs. Maybe it's the spine lock thing. I'm not ruling them out completely, just that I'm not fond of them.

If you really want to think about spinelocks give some real thought to Spyderco and some of their smaller models - while you can -- Some are living on limited time I hear, another to look at which is not in the same league as the 705s would be the CRKT line. for the bucks they are a value! have fun shopping !

I had no idea there were so many 705 fans out there! My favorite by far (folder or fixed) of all time, and I've got a lot of knives. I'd really like to see BM bless us with an M2 blade, but in the meantime, the 705 with ATS34 really is IMHO the ultimate pocket folder.

Hey, man, take a look at the Spyderco Native in CPM440V. MJ&S Knives has them for $43 + $5 shipping. You cannpt beat the price and you cannot beat the blade. I've carried and used the hell out of my BF Native for over a year now and it has the same blade and it still does not need to be even touched up. The lock up with the back lock is all that I could ask, as is the lock on the two regular Natives that I have bought from Mark to give to friends. You really should look at one before you decide and spend a whole bunch of money for a knife with a blade that has a lesser steel in it.

Another vote for the Native. The handle fits my hand wonderfully, and even though mine is a GiN-1 blade, it is really sharp after some serious use. Reversable clip, really neat and sturdy blade shape, for a bit under half the cost of a 705. What is not to like?

Well, if you're really looking to widen your horizens and find something besides a Benchmade (not that they're bad or inadequet), you could look into the Kershaw Boa.

It is ambidextrous with a blade that isn't that long. Just over 3" I think. Plus there is the speed-safe and the CPM-440V...

You could put nacho cheese sauce on it...

Of course, the speed-safe is considered 'automatic,' so check your laws.

I'll still take an axis lock over any similar lockback or liner lock (especially since the aixs is fully ambidextrous, not left- OR right-handed like a liner lock).

Where is the Speed Safe considered an Auto?

As far as I know, pretty much any state (except the lucky ones...you know who you are) will consider it an automatic knife. If anyone has more information on this (specifically Mass. and Maine, in my case), I would be happy to be wrong.

Stiletto,

It must be either left-handed or fully ambi. My mini-AFCK is the left handed version so it's fine. BUT, the blade needs to be 3" or under. Why get a knife that is only 1/8" shorter than my BM 812? I want something that will make it through airport security (hence no serrations & under 3").
