Anybody have any opinion good or bad for its use as a lubricant, and rust penetrator? I have been using it lately on some old knives laying around and it seems to work rather well. I'm not a big fan of WD -40 for the same purposes. I know its not high tech but its been around forever. What's your opinion?

It is a good old and proven standby for lots of lubrication and rust preventative. It was used for years on sewing machines and their intricate and close tolerance parts. I use it today for a lot of my traditional folders, an on knives that I sharpen that are in need of some lubricant on the pivot points, from neglect from their owners. Good stuff in my opinion.

Blessings,

Omar

I use it almost exclusively on all of my knives, but the knives I store long-term get a more modern treatment - Renwax or Rem Oil.

I'm partial to the old metal cans for 3-in-1 oil. The newer plastic bottles are okay, but I have a collection of old metal oil & solvent cans: 3-in-1 oil, Liquid Wrench, WD-40, Mitee oil, graphite, etc. They go well with my traditional pocket knives.

I use it.
I use a silicone spray on my SS folders, but that didn't seem to work as well on carbon steel slipjoints. So I went back to 3 in 1, & I like it better.

I use it because I have it, it seems to work best when applied sparingly. A little is just right; too much and I can feel the viscosity slowing down the action when opening (modern folders at least)

That was always the oil my dad had around for things, he carried a small stockman mostly if I remember. He wasn't a knife guy but always had one, guess because of his generation and being born and raised on a farm.

I used 3-in-1 for a while, but I didn't like the smell it gave off.

Let me rephrase that. I love the smell of 3-in-1, but to a certain extent. I don't want my clothes, specifically my pockets, to smell.

I now use Benchmade Blue Lube. Odorless.

Lol, I don't mind the smell like someone posted a little dab will do ya, Brill Cream, you may not have heard of that CJZ.

3-in-1 is definitely good stuff, been around forever, but I prefer current high-tech lubes that offer longer-lasting rust prevention, probably due to additives such as teflon. I'm partial to BreakFree CLP, but there are many similar products that others on this forum recommend.

I used Break free in the military in the mid eighties worked great for cleaning weapons, I don't remember the oil or lube given to us but I think it was in an old green plastic bottle. But I still go back to 3 in one, you can buy it anywhere at most any store and it works great.
