...as heard on the CBC evening news while driving home..
In Inuvut Park in the Northwest territories two couples were camping out when one pair were awakened by a polar bear ripping open the top of the tent, their screams drove the bear to the other tent where he attacked again. The man in the first tent ran over and in his words "stabbed the bear under the lower jaw until he went away.. when it is your friends you cannot just stand by."
The mauled couple are both in hospital, the man with serious but non life threatening injuries.
The saviour had what was described in the news as "A 3 inch folding penknife"

Hard to say if they were just lucky, dumb, or both. According to news reports a guide shot the bear with a .243, which is not my idea of a bear stopper (OK, I have taken moose with a .243, as well as deer, and Inuit have taken polar bears with .22s, but something .30 caliber on up is better). My preference for a 3" bear stopper blade would be a SAK taped to the butt of my 870 loaded with slugs.

There was an article in -- I can't remember, Blade, maybe, or perhaps more than one magazine -- about a guy who fought off an attacking bear somewhere in the United States. He did it with his Buck 110 -- and then framed the sucker (the knife, not the bear) after it was all over.

I thought that was pretty cool.

Alberta Ed..
I have been working since I heard this item so there may be a lot more to the story..they did say there had been reports of an agressive bear the night before, but no bear was found and the campers were logged in and allowed to camp.
Was the bear supposed to have been wounded before or after this incident?

This guy needs a medal and a full psych workup.

That was insanely brave of him to go after a 10' tall carvivore that looks at humans as just another item on the Arctic takeout menu with a 3" blade! WHOA!!

The news reports are pretty scattered, and considering that 30 per cent accuracy is about as good as it gets in the media, it's difficult to say. Apparently this was a young bear, probably booted out by its mother and on its own for the first time. Let's hope someone close to the situation comes up with a coherent account.

We aught to find out who that guy is and give him a lifetime free membership! Oh and point out the bonus points of a knife like a Busse Battle Mistress!;) . That is one brave/insane dude!

This was on the Wilderness and Survival Skills blade forum. In the third paragraph it mentions a man using a pocketknife to defend against a hungry polar bear. It did not work. The bear ate about fifty pounds of the man.

It isn't the pocketknife that makes the difference, but the man armed with it.

In Such a situation, I would at least carry a SIFU, most likely a fixed blade like a greco fighter or a khukri and a gun. If you camp in an area where there are polar bears, which idiot is gonna pack only a 3 inch folder?

First, I think the story is cool, second, I have my doubts about if this really happened.
