3 Knife System

Never actually thought of it like that, but you are right. I guess I use a 3-blade knife system on a daily basis, minus the large fixed blade. I'm not in Iraq and really don't have a use for it. But that's a great article you wrote there. Keep up the good work.

Well done. Mirrors my outdoors philosophy. My tactical blade is for emergencies only ie; a lost fixed blade or the unlikely event that I need to defend myself etc. Again, great article.

I tend to gravitate towards a 'light as possible' philosophy, but I think it is a well written article that will be well received by your intended audience.

I'm a fixie nut but you're right, a 3 blade system covers all your bases, even for survival. One big brutal piece for rough use, one thin, precise blade for finer tasks and a multitool. That's what I carry for backcountry hiking/camping etc.

Sound theory:thumbup:, I'm an avid hunter and pretty much have been using the 3 knife system to some degree, if not exactly, at times. Just did it out of common sense and never really defined it as you have.:D

Elmer Keith, that grand old outdoorsman (he invented the .44 magnum) wrote way back in the 40's that all a woodsman/hunter needed was a sturdy sheath/hunting knife and a jacknife.

Seems like we are rediscovering that 50 years later.

I use the three knife system as well.
Just I use two folders and a multi-tool.
One BIG folder, one little folder and a Leatherman Charge XTi.
Occassionally I will substitute a fixed for the BIG folder.
But, for whatever reason, fixed blades are illegal
in Oklahoma City.:jerkit:
Thereofre the fixed is for when I am outward bound.

Great stuff in that article  I enjoyed it and it is something that most of us seem to do subconsciously on our day to day and outdoor adventures.

I look forward to future articles :)

take care, J.

I prefer 2 knives, One fixed, one folder/multitool. A folding knife and swiss army knife is redundant.

This is a commentary I wrote for military publications.
Very nice article and an interesting view of a standard knife load out for combat.

I prefer 2 knives, One fixed, one folder/multitool. A folding knife and swiss army knife is redundant.
I guess that depends on how you view your SAK and which one you carry. Now, something like the Vic OHT I view as a primary blade with some useful tools included. Carrying another folder could be redundant in that case. With something like the SwissChamp, on the other hand, I view it as a useful toolkit which happens to include a back up blade. In that case I would prefer a dedicated folder as my primary "using" blade.
