first is a Schrade/Walden/N.Y. U.S.A., jigged bone (i think) Peanut, same as a 272, serial on rt. front bolster: 383; clip hollow ground, i think.

there are no other markings on this knife. seller said he acquired this from Schrade just prior to closing. do you think it really is pre '73; or an EOD put together, and if so, why a serial # ?

2nd is a 3 9/16" serpentine stockman (same as 897UH; 825; or 895): Schrade/Walden/N.Y. U.S.A., no other markings or shield, in what looks under 9x like jigged bone.

again, acquired from Schrade just prior to closing. EOD or "real" Schrade Walden ?

anybodyelse have a Schrade+ 881 ? methinks another EOD ?
thanks for any help, roland

for some reason this pic of 897-like stockman did not show up, so here it is:

Knife 1 is pre-2004, a Cigar Box Schrade. Nice. There are Chinese versions of these too, but this is a real one.
Knife 2 I'd guess it is a Bear Mfg. Post 2004. Looks like bone handles.
Knife 3 is a later version Open Stock 881 with stainless blades. They made some of those Open Stocks for quite a while, maybe revived as a special edition.

All are best guess without research.

thanks Hal. i am not familiar with "Cigar Box Schrades". were these issued just before 2004 closing ?
on 2nd one, seller is a respected BF member (with some old posts here) and stated he got the knives in Aug. & Sept. 2004 from Schrade directly. so were there any "bears" there then ? roland

#1 I think so
#2 I don't know for sure. That's just what that looks like.

Hey guys, I believe #2 is a cigar box knife as well, although probably an incomplete one as the finished knives had shields and numbered bolsters. The bottom knife in this photo is a completed one, #484. I've got the trapper in the box but I have to take a pic of it. I'll post here as soon as I "develop" it. Beware the post Schrade cigar box knives (Taylor) as the boxes were nearly identical. The "real" ones have "Imperial Schrade Corp" printed on the inside bottom left of the cover. I'll post a photo of that as well.

Aha. That makes the story Roland got valid. I've never seen a complete set of the Cigar Box Schrades, but the shield tips it off. The absence of the shield on Roland's made me guess Bear.

Ok, here you go. This is #309. As you can see it says Imperial Schrade on the lower left side of the open cover. I believe the Taylor copies say "Under License of Taylor Cutlery", or something similar. I also don't believe they're serialized, hence the reason the original Schrade ones are much more collectable.

Roland - Look on 2004 catalog page 8. Cigar Box Classics. Says "Tree Bark Bone" (like your Example 1). The ones they show are jigged bone (like your (Example 2). The other listing is a flyer from some green ones in 2003.

I am pretty sure I have seen that 881 in SCHRADE+ before, in a tin like the Old Timer Classics, but not for a long time, and can't locate any old docs. Rick - I think you are right about it being rare.

thanks for all this help. turns out i have 3 nice Schrades here( and at v. reasonable cost).
i really enjoy buying a Schrade knife, poorly described and with few or no other bidders, and not being sure of exactly what it is.
sometimes it turns out to be a "gem". roland
