Last Saturday morning, my sister called and said she had a project for me. She had acquired an abandoned dog from the pound and wanted to see if Karen and I would be able to work with it. So down to Mesa he came. He is a very miniature Chihuahua, almost all black and only 4 pounds. On Friday we had to take him back up to the vet to get his manhood removed and have his leg looked at. When the pound took him in he had a broken leg. They casted it, but it never healed, so he had to have it amputated. They said it would take a few weeks for him to adjust...............try a few hours. By the time we got him home on Saturday he was running around the backyard like usual. He is really adorable and only barks when men come around...........so much for dating..........LOL. (Karen had her first male visitor and Mike-ee barked and growled and did his best to protect her. Actually she did just fine. They went back and she introduced him to her khuk collection:D great way to make a boyfriend.:D what can I say) He barked the first night at Sheba, but when he came home with the little plastic collar on Sheba must have felt sorry for him and actually let him lick her face all up. It was quite cute. So hopefully they will remain friends.

I've never been one much for small dogs, but this one has my heart completely and he'll be joining the estrogen team and providing a little maleness to our all female house.............LOL:D

Alsatian shepherd , Rottweiler. Malamute . All definitely not small dogs
I don,t mind small dogs . I find they bark for no reason which is a definite no-no . I,m glad you are able to help the dog out . It overcame its handicap in nothing flat . I thought of a smaller dog when I am older . It would have to be something like a Jack Russel .

Best wishes to the little guy and your sister! A guy at work was asked to adopt a dog from an aged women who couldn't care for it anymore. He was really concerned because the dog only had 3 legs... she had lost a leg to cancer. 'What if the cancer comes back & she has to have another leg removed?' I offered... 'You and she will cross that bridge when the time comes... now adopt the dog!' Seems to me that conversation took place 5 years ago! :)

Congratulations Mamav!! You did a wonderful thing by inviting the little one into your home and caring for it so well.

I've met Chihuahuas that I liked and others that didn't like me. ;) They tend to be one person dogs, often bonding to the Mom or Dad of the household and not letting other members pick them up or love on them. I've also noted that many are food aggressive to people and other dogs. But overall they are great little lap dogs that provide lots of company.

Enjoy!!

I know a three-legged cat named Tripod. He gets around just fine.

Does this guy of yours look like the Taco Bell dog?

Gin - He's not going to add much maleness after what you did to him. Guess I was lucky when I visited to leave intact. Good to know that Sheba now has a buddy...keep them both away from the anti-freeze!

He is a very miniature Chihuahua>>> Gin

I'm sure he felt better about himself than either of you.

On a more serious note, there is a three legged wolf dog in our town....

Don't forget he is NOT a small dog, he is a big dog in a small dog suit. he thinks he is a lean mean fightin' machine & can beat any body on the block. size & leg count means nothing to him. they get very protective of their wimmen, especially if you let them take over as alpha pack leader. if you don't start soon, he'll outmaneuver you & be in charge

some helpful articles:

if he barks excessively, won't let others near or acts overly protective, it's because you are not being the pack leader, so he has to take on the job. he'd much rather you did tho.

p.s. - it takes about 6 mo. for the testosterone levels to work their way down after the snip.

My mom had a Chihuahua that was the most dominant dog I've ever known. Every time he met a new dog he cowed it, then was friendly as hell with it. You couldn't lay a hand on my mom while he was around. Probably just didn't meet the wrong dog. Eventually, when they moved to the farm, he disapeared. They think cayotes got him. Great dog.

Gin?

Have fun with him. I nominate "Genghis" as a name....because, obviously, "Genghis Cahn" run.

Your visit to the vet reminded me of a FAR SIDE cartoon.

A dog in the backseat of a car pulling out of the driveway says to another dog in a yard, "Guess what, Rex? I'm going to the vet to get tutored!"

Enjoy.

edit:

Thanks for all the insight into training. I've never done too well with that, so this will be a good time to learn. It seems he is already pretty obedient and knows who's boss, but it will be good to make sure I keep that under control. One of the reasons I never liked little dogs before was their aggressive nature. So that will be the first thing worked on. Brandon may get hired to come visit often to teach him............LOL............Karen will like that.;)

when she was young. They called it Trippy. If I remember the story right, he lived a pretty full life. Good for you, Gin.
