I bought some of this for my straight razor strop, being as fine as it it, so you think it would work for surface scratches as well?

Yes it will help some, I have been polishing a blade I got off the forum. I thought starting with a 3 micron or similar for example would keep the blade less damaged and more polished. Let me tell you, you have to put some serious elbow grease to get out scratches out with a smaller micron polish. Its like watching grass grow lol. If you are willing to do so and put in the time, it can be achieved but you will have to work at it. Plus side is it will be almost a pure mirror finish when you are done. I am still working on my project but I am about half way there. I quit counting the hours I have put into it. Words of advice. Find something else to be doing to keep your mind busy. Cover the sharp edge so you don't cut off a finger by not paying attention. Then just watch your favorite show or polish away. Next thing you know the reflection of the overhead light will catch your eye in the newly mirrored surface. These blades in a mirror finish are just outstanding though to be honest. Its worth the time and effort just to admire and run your fingers over the exceptionally smooth blade. I call the surface "anti demonic silk". Kids and I made that up. Reason for the name, it feels a smooth as silk but it will cut the "He!!" out of you.

Is it a paste or is it the little bar?

It's a powder to coat on the strop.

Should I get green versus the red? I know with the powder I have to mix it with Vasaline or some such

For me mothers mag polish is a far more effective way to remove scratches,, unless they are really deep, then I'd recommend hand sanding with wet sandpaper,, 800 grit and up

Mothers just put a couple mirror spots on it and I was trying to avoid that. Have a few scratches near the tip of my FFBM I was trying to get out and a few light kydex scratches on the MOASS

3 micron for a razor strop is awfully coarse. To give you an idea, a decent finishing stone is in the 1 micron range, and the best ones are in the 0.5 micron range.

As far as scratch removal, depends on the steel. Iron Oxide mixed with some other things is used as one of the polishing stages for samurai swords.
