Finally got these finished up the other day and finally got pictures..As I am fairly new to making Hawks I would like your opinions. The one with the Osage Orange handle is a order and the guy asked for the leather wrap on the handle like the other one I did.The Bowie is a Old file I forged out and put a steel guard on and handled with a dyed and stabilized cow bone I found and did the dye and stabilizing on.The small Hawk is mild steel with a saw blade welded into the head for the cutting edge. The other two are 5160 steel forged from round rod.
Thanks,
Bruce

As I am fairly new to making Hawks...

I don't believe you. :D Those hawks are awesome. I don't think you'll get any negative comments on those. But that's pretty normal from what I've seen of your work. That Bowie is just as awesome as the hawks. It looks like there are going to be some very happy customers for these hawks.

Those are really nice looking hawks---I especially like the hammer poll model! Is there a reason why more of the shaft protrudes above the head on the other two models? By the way, the grain on the shafts is terrific.

The reason for the two having more protruding from the top is because I thought that it was supposed to so that the head could keep itself tight when being used, and if some one buy's these (other than the order)The handle may shrink a little in there climate. The little small one i did put a wedge in the top of the handle so that is why it isn't as high out the top..
Like I said I am relatively new to Hawk making and have learned to make these by trial and error,so if the handles aren't set correctly I need to know..so please let me know..

Very, very nice hawks, Bruce! Unless you have massive hands, judging from the size of their heads, I'd categorize these as "head hammers" rather than gen'l camp tools. I bet they are super fast in the hand. Nice job!

FYI, here is a discussion regarding head to haft attachment.

Brian C,that was a cool thread...Made me realize I have allot of learning to do on how I make a wrapped hawk head. And I thoughtthat the eye was supposed to be soft on a hawk so it would stand the shock of impact,I see were they were talking about a tempered eye,all mine are just normalized and only part of the cutting edge back towards the eye is hardened and tempered,Just like my Bowie knives...Think I will start another thread and ask some questions I have been wanting to know,Let me know how the hawk you got holds up will you please..
Bruce

Bruce, I just re-read the haft attachment thread and, while Cliff mentions that hawk "...heads are tempered steel...", I couldn't find any reference to hardening the eyes. I also checked Cold Steel's hawk page and here's what it says about their hawks: "...these are differentially heat treated. This means that the cutting edge and hammer face is fully hardened, while the balance of the head is left relatively soft to absorb the shock of striking blows." It sounds to me like you are already doing them right.

H & B Forge uses a softer eye and hardened blade. www.hbforge.com Two Hawks uses investment cast heads, but I don't recall the details of his hardening process. www.2hawks.net There's a thread from a few months back in which Two Hawks discusses the relative attributes of forged and investment cast heads.
