Hi, i have heard some rumors about the camillus company and wanted to ask some questions:
1.Does camillus make knives or parts for other companies (chris reeve, cold steel)?
2.Is the cqb1 realy the standard knife of the navy seals?Ive heard that the seals first chose Mad-dog knives but they didnt meet the expectaions(rusted and broke)-is this true?
3.is carbon v the same as the 0170-6c becker steel?

Thanks for any answers

While I am not the "official" answer man. I will tell you what I do know from previous discussions.

question 1 - Don't know about parts, but I do know Camillus grinds all of Cold Steels Carbon V blades.

Question 2 - don't know

Question 3- not sure about the same steel, but Carbon V isn't truly a single steel recipe. It is a carbon steel in to 1080-1090 range. It changes by by what is avilable at the time of each production run.

Max,
I'll always divulge as much information as I can here, but there are some things I can't talk about. You have brought up a couple of them......

1. Yes, CAMILLUS has always, and still is a major OEM manufacturer for other knife companies. Most of the time we make the entire knife for the customer, sometimes we just do parts[usually blades]. An example would be EDI, back when I was EDI knives, we contracted with CAMILLUS to make our blades for us. Some of our customer don't mind us sharing this information, for instance we make REMINGTON's knives, but most ask us to keep this information private. We respect their wishes.

2. The CQB is not the "Official Seal Knife". It was recently approved by the Navy for use as a pilots survival knife for Navy and Marine pilots. Its not an issue item, just on the "approved list". It has an NSN number, and we have been shipping ALLOT of them to the military.

3. I have no idea what Carbon V steel is.....and if I knew, I'd have to....buy you a beer if you ever come to the bladeshow:p

Chris Reeve knives are all made in his own shop, generally to his own design, although the Green Beret was a collaboration with Mr. Harsey. :D

That's funny you should mention it because just today on one of my weekend antique store hunts I acquired a small Premium Pen with a Dura-Stag or Staglon handle. When I first took a look at it I thought it was a Schrade because it looked just like the 897UH Uncle Henry that I just bought brand new 3 months ago. To my surprise it was a Camillus but with the exact same type of Stag-Lookalike handle as the Schrade! I can't tell how old this knife is because Camillus doesn't use a numbering system but it is in mint condition. I don't think it is new because the lady I bought it from got them from her dad and he was pretty old. She also had a mint Schrade 340T and a mint Case 5232 with an awesome Sambar Stag handle. It was a good weekend for hunting to say the least! :)

The second half of your #2 question is wrong. The SEAL's did choose MD but the split had more to do with payments not being made in a timely fashion and a man having to earn a living to support his family.

I've got an old boy skout pocket knife with the brand "ulster" on it that looks just like the camillus BS knide (4 blade model) Did camillus make these?

just wondering...
