For those of you who have watched "Inside the Actors Studio", you will understand this reference.

James Lipton: "What sound or noise do you hate?"
Me: "The hollow "thack" noise your torsion bar makes when it falls victim to father time. Oh, the disappointment and horror (yes, I know, it's an easy fix)."

Here are my 3 statements:

1) I hate that sound.

2) KAI customer service is still top shelf. Wow, you guys go above and beyond every time. I already (within minutes) have another torsion bar in route no questions asked (besides my name an address of course). As a side note to those who go on the forums before contacting CS (call them first... seriously).

3) You have GOT to put a detent hole on these knives. I used to be one of those guys beating the "I prefer to make mine a manual" drum. This is no longer my reasoning or justification. It is simply a safety issue. Once that bar breaks, it won't stay closed. Period. For those who carry tip up, this is a potentially dangerous problem. That is one nasty cut waiting to happen to the unobservant individual who doesn't realize the bar actually held the knife closed. It also makes the knife unable to carry for the remainder of the day (which is a pain in the a** especially when you need it). Luckily, I'm not a complete moron (only a mild one) and knew to go ahead and wrap my blade to hold it shut before putting it back in my pocket (see photo below):

However, this is not ideal. Think of this like a car. A car doesn't just use a seat belt, or an airbag, or a traction control system, and etc to ensure safety. It utilizes all of them simultaneously. An assisted knife should be no different. Leave a back up (In case s***) option for if or when that bar fails. Please do not look at this as a complaint. Truly, it's not. View this as feedback and a recommendation from a consumer who uses the knife appropriately on a daily basis.

Questions:

1. Can you use the torsion bar from the ZT 0350 or Kershaw blur on the Knockout?

2. Does anybody know of person who could modify the 1870 and add a detent hole?

I've done it on several knives.

Also, I have two spare torsion bars for the Knockout. E-mail me your address.

No need to mail me torsion bars. KAI covered that quickly. Thank you for your offer! Have you made that mod to your personal Knockout? If so, how did it turn out?

Yes, I did mine, as well as a few others. Two other Knockouts and three Pistons. They look factory. I'll add some photos...

How does it operate w/ a detent and no torsion bar?

Without the torsion bar (and with no detent) you can tighten the pivot pin screw a little bit and it will work fine as a manual. There's still a ball detent in the lock; just no hole in the blade.
Without the torsion bar and with a detent drilled, it's even better. I can "pop" mine out without a wrist flick.

I completely agree on the detent safety issue. In fact that was the only reason my latest acquirement was the manual 0550.
