3 Year Knife Review - The Becker BK5 Magnum Camp

Great review for a knife that never sold well for exactly your first impressions.
I do prefer my Camillus version BK5 though... if you get a chance, pick one up!

Well Daniel, as you can see from the review, I had my own doubts about the design when and even before I purchased it. It's an unusual design. I was far more used to a 5 to 5 1/2 in 3/16 thick drop point than something like this. That said, it changed the way I think of knives.

Ethan Becker recently said, "Using this knife is a graduate course, at the post doctoral level, in blade design....... Speed, balance, power, utility.....YES!"

Thanks for the good word.

Very nice write up/review Survivormind, and great to see you on the forum! Hope all is going well for you and yours. Glad to see that simple paracord sheath mod has worked out so well for you...

Take care!

Haha! There you are and yes, thanks for letting me steal your idea on the sheath mod. I was hoping you'd pop up and remind me of your name. I'll change the review to give you credits. That sheath looks waaaay too new, by the way...

HAHA! Yah, We're still getting there, it get used all the time, sheath is holding up really well, but I agree! However! Challenge accepted, we will see what we can do about that too clean sheath ;)

And no worries man, I am just glad it has worked out for you. You are showcasing this blade perfectly... The 5 really gets under appreciated as the "go to" kind of knife it is. It is one of the few blades of its kind on the market, and especially at its price range. You have really done quite the perfect review of this blade demonstrating what a versatile and resilient design it really is. Take a Mastersmith's blade, a ergonomic/design geniuses handles, and a renowned knife companies steel, and you end up with something truly beautiful. Built to cut, and built to work. Hate to see it go (if it actually does) cause there really isn't another like it.

Thank you again man for the awesome review, more people really need to see what a great blade this thing is and your are helping out a lot.

All of my sheaths look trashed in a short period of time but that's a given with the kind of life I live. I am curious to see where you will take the challenge though...

You really hit the nail on the head with, "Take a Mastersmith's blade, a ergonomic/design geniuses handles, and a renowned knife companies steel, and you end up with something truly beautiful. Built to cut, and built to work." I don't think I said it this clearly in my review. What a lot of people don't understand is Jerry Fisk's history and reputation. The guy is in the Bladesmith Hall of Fame. YES. Ergonomic design genius fits Ethan quite well. He's also a nice guy. :)

They sure designed one hell of a knife.

Excellent review I thought about picking one of these up but an Esee 4 landed in my lap for a similar price. Hopefully I'll pick one up in the near future.

I've always liked the looks of the BK5; I scooped up a really nice reground BK7 a while back so it has held off the need for a BK5 - for now... ;)

Oh don't hesitate ;) Price wise the time to get on one is now! Plus there's been some rumor about it going away!!! I hope not but. .You won't regret it. It's a big knife, that will do big knife jobs, but doesn't always feel like a big knife. Which is a good thing!

One of the attractions to me with this blade (from what I have read) is that Jerry Fisk designed it after more traditional American Frontier type trade knives. Basically take that pattern and put a more modern twist on it. Beef it up and make it do well at the tasks one would need at a camp site or on the trail without creating a 2 pound hunk of steel. I'm sure there's more to it, but the knife has a pretty interesting history.

Awesome review. I really dig your blog. Very refreshing to see a family live like yours is doing.
