30 06 does it all

It is a great cartridge that can do a lot of things. I have a couple but rarely shoot them much anymore. Most of my hunting is done with a .257 Roberts or a 7mm-08 these days. But I do love the old ought six.

Winchester Model 70. In 30-06. Love the gun. Hate the scope. Time for a new one for next deer season.

(I know i already posted that pic, but its the only one i currently have.)

Don't have a good pic, but I have a Ruger American in 30.06 with a Vortex 7 x 32 scope on it - it's a great rifle and a versatile cartridge.

That is one caliber that packs a wallop!!!

I used to use a Ruger M77 in 30-06 but now I have an emotional and mental aversion to 30-.06

October 1918 stamped Eddystone 1917 in Gov't .30. My main hunting rifle.

Here's my dad with his $125.00 Rem 700 in .30-'06. He and I have both taken many animals with this gun. He got his antelope this last year with it at 300 yards.

The only deer I shot was with one. Dropped it like I threw a switch.

Great cartridge. And a great choice for a one rifle scenario.

I love mine. It is an FN Mauser action with an E.R. Shaw barrel on it. My Dad was a custom gunsmith and it is one that we built together when I was in my early teens. I will take a couple of pics later and get them up. Something about a 6-1/2 lb 30-06 that just makes you go...hhmmmm.

Some fine guns and nice pics. The 30 06 has done it from groundhogs to big bears and wont break the bank doing it.

Fast14riot.. I believe you have posted before of your Dads 30 06 when he shot his antelope. he sounds like the one gun man who knows how to use it. do you know what his load was when he took the speed goat at 300yds?

forgive me if I ramble on ,but its winter , cold, Hunting is pretty much over here in Pa, I have Cabin Fever .

I believe it was 55gr. of H4830 and Win primers. 180gr. Nosler ballistic tips. Be responsible, work up your own load and check for pressure signs. I am not 100% certain this is the correct load recipe, bla bla bla, important safety stuff. He took a deer at 350 with that gun and load, I took a pig at 10 yards with that load, it's just the right load for his gun. Still working up the load for my 1917.

It is his primary big game rifle, but he did bring along the BFR in .460S&W if we got the chance to take a goat inside of 250 yards.

Nice. I've favoured the 30-06 for a while. Havnt gottom one of my own yet, but its going to be one of the next I get. Great caliber love it hence the numbers on my username.

For any fan of the .30-'06 one should check out The Riflemans Journal blog by German Salazar. He is a long range shooter but has many tips and tricks for the caliber. Worthwhile reading.

Not the only 30.06 I own but this one is my favorite. Suppose I could hunt with it in a pinch.

Many moons ago I had a low serial numbered 30-06. It had been in the family for quite a while and had seen considerable use. These days I regret having sold it off to a friend who moved to Alaska. Now he is enjoying the old gun and has reported that it still shoots like a charm and the vintage optics have remained true and clear.

That old Remington 700 with the Redfield 3x9 did everything I ever wanted with a high powered rifle. If memory serves, it was made in the early 1960's. I still have two boxes of the old 220 grain ammo that could have been used to bump off a freight train.

Wonder what a replacement such at this would set me back these days? That plus a box of those swift accelerators!

I don't have picture posting ability.

But I do love the .06, of the 25 caliber kind. Savage Model 110 with AccuTrigger and Redfield Revolution 3x9. Excellent deer rifle with 120 grain Federal Fushions.

I did just buy a 30-06, Ruger American, slapped a Redfield Revenge 3x9 on it, shooting 180 grain Federal Fushions, should I ever decide to rifle hunt Elk here, I gererally Bow Hunt the Elk.

I can't say that I like the 30-06 as much as the 25-06 though.

I did just get a brand new (still in box) RCBS Rock Chucker Supreme Reloading Kit, awaiting spring to build a new shed to set it up in, perhaps with a bit of reloading magic I will come to appreciate the 30-06 a little more. I just don't have a reason to love it right now due to not hunting with it.

My old man killed a lot of moose with his 06. He also told me a story about back in his youth working in a Yukon mine. They choppered them in and one copter caught a power line and was laying upside down in the water, when he went in once. He also told me that they had a grizzly hanging around camp and that one time they came back and it had punctured the tin in a Coleman stove with its teeth and trashed their camp. He killed that bear with his 06 as he had the only powerful rifle in camp. He said that he hit it until he emptied the magazine and that at one point the bear was getting close. Growling, jaw popping and still coming to him by its front legs only. The bear was way too close for the old mans comfort when it finally stopped. He told me that he grabbed a tree after and barfed his guts out. This is the best of my recollection from a story told to me as a kid in the 60's.
