So I decided I'm going to get the Sharpmaker, and I don't want to get a very expensive knife for my first one. So I have been researching and I've come to see that many people like the RAT 1, so I think might either get the RAT 1 or the Spyderco Persistance. I want a sturdy knife that can take a beating and a blade that will hold its edge for a good while. Any other recommendations will be welcomed. Right now my price point is around $30.

I'd get a persistence or a tenacious. Also some kershaws can be had for that price.

The Rat 1 has a blade made of AUS 8 is around 55-56 RH so it's not going to hold its edge for a long time with heavy use, however it is easy to touch up.Thats the trade off with the softer heat treat.Cold Steel makes some folders for around $40 that are around 58-59 RH that hold their edge much longer

I Own Most Of The Tenacious Line, All I Need Is The Ambitious. =]
But They Are Great Knives, Especially At Their Price Point.

At That Price Point You Can Also Get:
Kershaw Scamp
Kershaw Nerve
Kershaw One Ton
Kershaw Leek
Kershaw Scallion

All Are Good Knives For The Money.

+1 For the Skyline. It's a knife everyone should own. Of course, everyone should also own a Delica. :D

i have the ontario rat 1 and i also have the spyderco tenacious and out of the two i carry and abuse the tenacious way more then the rat. i lost the tenacious while fishin at the river a couple weeks ago and just found it the other day nothing wrong with it at all just a little sand in it. i would say the tenacious all day every day.

Been using both the RAT 1 and the Tenacious in rotation with my other knives that I take to work. The knife I clip to my pocket is the one I beat up, cut nasty stuff with, and generally do things to I wouldn't think of doing with my better knives in my construction work.

I don't carry the Tenacious much as it is wide enough that it rubs a hot spot on my leg when I have my tool belt on. The Rat 1 is great, and tucks in nicely without any problems under my tool belt. I have seen some great recommendations, and I can tell you that due to a tip on this forum I went to W**mart (sold plenty of other places, I just wound up there) and bought a Kershaw Crown. In my opinion it could be one of the nicest knives to be had for the mid teens from your pocket book.

Enlans.
Enlan EL01 - sturdy, flipper, solid tank build. 8Cr13MoV steel at 57-59RC should hold up well
Enlan EL02 - more elegant, micarta handle. It's sibling EL02B is stonewashed blade with G10 handle. Blade Steel 8Cr13MoV same as EL01.
Enlan EL06 - similar to EL02, but with liner lock. Blade is 9Cr13MoV and theoritically should do better with same heat treat.

All should be 20-25$ shipped.
