This one is a stretch, I know. Looking for a small assisted opener - decent steel, removable clip, preferably lefty-friendly. Current EDC is a Benchmite II and it's a great little knife.

Suggestions (and links) welcomed!

Yeah, I know the deals are there on eBay. The problem is this. I've got a gift certificate that's about to expire fairly soon. Gift certificate works on Amazon, not on eBay.

Neither are assisted, but I hear nothing but good things about the Boker Subcom ($25.28 on Amazon) and the Ka-Bar Dozier Folding Hunters (29.99 on Amazon).

You have $30 to spend with Amazon? Why not get one or more good books? Or does anyone read books any more?

Dr. Mudd has a point there...Heck, how about a book about knives?
($19.99 on Amazon)

Can't drool over the pictures and/or absorb the knowledge on the pages when driving...:(

I'm a traveling software rep covering MN and IA...if only they could print individual pages of a book on billboards...I could read 'em as I drove by!

So if lefty-friendly A/O is essentially out, what about a more typical 3" folder? Is there anything available with high-quality (AUS8 or higher) available in the price range?

Maybe I need to take a look at Slickdeals and see if anyone has got any handy little Amazon "% Off" codes or something. I know that I could easily grab an SOG Twitch or maybe a Spyderco Dragonfly if I looked hard enough and had a decent coupon.

I see a Camillus Sizzle for $28.63 from a third-party seller through Amazon, top on the list from a search on "Camillus Sizzle". Or you can get the Scallion shipped free for under $30. I have both, and I actually prefer a smooth flipper mechanism like on my M16-13Z. The AOs open scary fast, and close with force so I feel an accident is more likely.

I'm trying to visualize my Kershaw Chive (which is back in the U.S.), and aside from the removable pocket-clip, it seems lefty-friendly.

Awesome knife, under $30, crisp AO operation. Nothing not to like! Also cute as heck and sharp as sin.

Kershaw is known for good asisted opening knives.
Check out SOG too. Personally i dont like the look of their assisted openers.

I wouldnt buy from Amazon.com though. If youre going to buy a knife on the web, buy it from a a knife dealer who actually knows what he is selling.

Here's an idea... sell the gift certificate. (Seen lots of people do it on Craigslist) and then buy a better knife!

They're not AO, but Byrd knives fall within your price range and they offers a lot for the money. You could pick up a nice alox SAK for yourself as well.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I'm still thinking, but perhaps that Chive might not be a terrible choice. We'll see. I've always had a great experience with the Spyderco models I've owned (a ComboEdge Ladybug and an Endura), and the G10 Robin has been considered. I thought about selling the gift certificate, but there's a part of me who'll feel really horrible about doing that. It was a birthday gift from my sister in law.
