...a up and coming film maker named George Lucas changed the face of Science Fiction films with the release of a "Space Western" called Star Wars.

Hard to believe it's been that long!

Star Wars was the biggest thing ever when I was a kid. 30 years later and there's still Star Wars toys, movies, games, and even Star Wars postal stamps...

It is really too bad production wasn't better for the new ones. It killed a lot of joy I had for Star Wars overall, but that joy is coming back. Maybe this weekend an original trilogy party should be held... :)

I remember when the first Star Wars movie came out to poor reviews. Even the original movie poster looked cheasy; then it made money that first week; lots and lots of money, and suddenly the critics loved it.

New ones? New ones of what? There are no new Star Wars movies only the original trilogy. That's my story and I'm sticking to it... :)

I was trying to not turn the thread into a flame war...
I agree with you though. I haven't seen Episode III ...

I must admit that even as an adult, I came out of the theater after seeing the first one wanting my 1973 Super Beetle to be an X-wing!

There was a show running around on TV some months ago about the making of the original, and Harrison Ford related that at the big "award" scene at the end, when Han, Luke, et al were walking through the crowd to get their medals, the extras were all grousing..."What a dog", "This will flop big-time", etc.

I think I'm right in saying that - of the cast of the original film - everyone but one thought it would crash and burn, so they all took a fixed pay cheque. This turned out to be the worst business decision since Decca Records A&R man Dick Rowe declined to sign The Beatles, saying that "Guitar groups are on the way out."

The exception, who wisely took a percentage of the profits, was Sir Alec Guinness.

He was able to live comfortably off his residuals, and referred to it as "The gold from space"!

was at a wedding for my god father when it opened-the theater across the street from the reception had star wars-he went over had a chat with a guy and we went to the front of the line-it pays when your god father is "connected" of coarse he has spent the last 20 some years as a guest of the feds-

30 years ago? Thanks for making me feel OLD!;)

Ditto!! Wow, I can not believe that it has been 30n years!! Good Lord, WHERE does the time go?! I remember standing in line for "Star Wars", and the line wrapped around the theater, like 8 times!!

I didn't see it until the second weekend, after hearing several guys talking about it. I've wanted a lightsaber ever since ;)

I was 21 years old....in the service, stationed at Ft Bragg.
We went the first weekend it opened....stood in line for a couple of hours. The line snaked through the entire Fayettville mall.

I was completely blown away...never saw anything like it.
Went back the next day and watched it twice more....
Saw that movie at least 20 times in the first month it was out....

It still gives me a thrill when I watch it...:D
