My first and only SAK until now was a gift from mom and dad when I was 8 years old. It was a Wenger Classic 11 (or equivalent back in 1976). http://www.wenger-knife.ch/scripts/Modules/Products/listOne.aspx?idProducts=48&idn=81
I liked the look of the knife and all of the features. Unfortunately the blade and tools were painfully tight nail busters. The main blade was dull out of the box and I just couldn't get any of the tools open. I grew to hate that knife and never gave any SAK a 2nd chance. I'm not sure if than knife was a lemon or I lacked the hand strength necessary to easily open it at 8 years of age. I carried it for a short while, then gave it to my uncle.
After listening to so many of you speak highly of your SAK I decided to give them another try about a month ago. I purchased a Victorinox Mechanic because I really wanted the pliers instead of the scissors like on the Super Tinker.
I'm so pleasantly surprised with the quality of this knife for the price (eBay $21). I put it on my keychain and use it constantly. I just finished clearing up the tip of my daughter's glue bottle with the awl. I'm not sure how I lived without it for 30 years. The blades get razor sharp so easily. I'll admit that they dull pretty quickly, but that's okay because I always have a backup slipjoint in my pocket. My wife noticed it up close in action (pliers, knife, wire stripper) for the first time yesterday as I fixed my daughter's Barbie toy electric guitar. She thought the SAK Mechanic was the neatest thing she'd ever seen. She usually thinks my knife obsession is silly.
I can't thank you guys(and gals) enough for talking up SAKs so much. You convinced me to give them another chance. The Mechanic is my go-to knife for most tasks throughout my day every day. I was so impressed that I purchased a Victorinox Rambler with yellow scales to match my boat keychain.
Thanks for helping me find a useful way to spend my money.
