My first and only SAK until now was a gift from mom and dad when I was 8 years old. It was a Wenger Classic 11 (or equivalent back in 1976). http://www.wenger-knife.ch/scripts/Modules/Products/listOne.aspx?idProducts=48&idn=81
I liked the look of the knife and all of the features. Unfortunately the blade and tools were painfully tight nail busters. The main blade was dull out of the box and I just couldn't get any of the tools open. I grew to hate that knife and never gave any SAK a 2nd chance. I'm not sure if than knife was a lemon or I lacked the hand strength necessary to easily open it at 8 years of age. I carried it for a short while, then gave it to my uncle.

After listening to so many of you speak highly of your SAK I decided to give them another try about a month ago. I purchased a Victorinox Mechanic because I really wanted the pliers instead of the scissors like on the Super Tinker.

I'm so pleasantly surprised with the quality of this knife for the price (eBay $21). I put it on my keychain and use it constantly. I just finished clearing up the tip of my daughter's glue bottle with the awl. I'm not sure how I lived without it for 30 years. The blades get razor sharp so easily. I'll admit that they dull pretty quickly, but that's okay because I always have a backup slipjoint in my pocket. My wife noticed it up close in action (pliers, knife, wire stripper) for the first time yesterday as I fixed my daughter's Barbie toy electric guitar. She thought the SAK Mechanic was the neatest thing she'd ever seen. She usually thinks my knife obsession is silly.

I can't thank you guys(and gals) enough for talking up SAKs so much. You convinced me to give them another chance. The Mechanic is my go-to knife for most tasks throughout my day every day. I was so impressed that I purchased a Victorinox Rambler with yellow scales to match my boat keychain.:D

Thanks for helping me find a useful way to spend my money.

Now that you're addicted . . . should we tell you about the Deluxe Tinker?

It's like your Mechanic, but with scissors, or rather a Super Tinker with pliers added.

:D

You can't beat an SAK for pure usefullness. Whatever knife I carry I ALWAYS have a SAK too. I like them...I've over 40 of them so I must do :)

Saks are great. Like alot of people around here no matter what else I'm carrying I always have a sak on me.

I carry a Mechanic every day. I own a Lawn/Landscape company and with all that equipment around, the pliers and screwdrivers come in handy all the time. It and a CV Sodbuster Jr are my main daily knives.

I agree, their one of the best knives for the money, and one of my favorites regardles of price,I carry tinker or fieldmaster (or sometimes another sak) every day.I just got a mechanic last week too:D

Jackknife, you've got me beat by a few,I've only got around 30:o

Augustus, first you bought a Victorinox this time. I prefer Victorinox.

Second, 30+ years makes a big difference in dexterity, doesn't it? :D

Great, now i'm gonna hafta give in to peer pressure and try a SAK. First the Peanut, now this. Gee whiz. I've never owned a SAK until I got a small Wenger Esquire at a garage sale for .50 cents. Neat little tool.

I was supposed to have a new Vic Classic SD in red alox in the mail today, but it hasn't shown up. Tomorrow, I guess. Sigh. I hate waiting.

I have not noticed my SAK blades dulling quickly. Someone on this Forum performed cutting tests of about four knives including a SAK. The SAK held its own in the tests as I recall.

Today I was doing some serious chores (rebuilding a shower) and as I got started I realized I had a Moore Maker stockman in my pocket. I thought to myself: "Should I go switch out the MM for my SAK Tinker now, or just wait until I need it, and then change knives?" I decided just to get to work. One of the first things I found I had to do was change out an old/dull blade in my Stanley utility knife, which required guess what -- a screwdriver. As I went to fetch my SAK I was thinking, "Well that took all of ten minutes before I needed it."

No two ways about it -- what they may lack in romance, SAKS more then make up for in utility, if not indispensibility.

Congrats on your new Mechanic!

My Classic SD showed up today! What a neat little knife.

I didn't expect it to be so small, but it disappears in my pocket. And now I have scissors with me. Cool!

Love the red alox scales.

Nice.... check out the Manager and the Mini-Champ too.

Amos Iron Wolf,
You folks certainly know how to make a guy spend money!:D

Rhino ,
I almost went with the Deluxe Tinker, but decided I didn't want such a thick knife for my keychain. Once again, you folks certainly know how to make a guy spend money!

Dr. Mudd,
30 years does make quite a difference!

pogo,
I guess I should've said it dulls quickly compared to some of my other knives. My D2 Queen knives and my Spyderco Manix in CPM-S30V seem to hold an edge forever. The SAK gets razor sharp much easier so a little touch up every couple of days keeps me going.

jacknife,
OVER 40 SAKS! Holy crap! ;)
