Howdy folks,
2nd forum asking same question, only a couple of fellas gave an opinion...

Budget $300 - survival knife, that can skin deer, fish, chop wood, open a can, and won't let me down.

1) The Skinny ASH1 looks great however some1 said for the same money go for an Outlaw. Is the Outlaw a better knife for same $$?

2) I can do $300 knife with a CS Ghurka Kukri $150
or
a BFFmistress $400.

3) am I making the biggest mistake by getting a Skinny and not a BFFM? this is the real question...

TY!!!

There are no all in one do it all knives.

A knife that is a good skinner will not be a very good chopper.

A Big Chopper won't be the best skinner, you can do it, but smaller knives work the best for skinning, usually in the 3 to 4" range.

For an all around knife I would get the Outlaw as it will chop a lot better than the Skinny Ash while not being too big.

If you really want a Chopper a Battle Mistress is the one to get, a FFBM or CGFBM.

Looke at ESEE(formerly RAT knives) They have some new stuff coming out and . Get you an Izula or RC-3 and one of the new machetes and you will still be under your price point.

One knife for both jobs, skinning/chopping, is going to compromise both activities. Having a $300.00 budget to work with will allow you to get two good quality tools, one knife for chopping & one knife for skinning. You may even be able to rig both sheaths toget her if you don't like the idea of more than one sheath.

An Ontario Ranger RD-9 would set you back about $100 and would take care of the big knife needs, while giving you close to $200 to find a nice Bark River to handle the other chores.:)

Did I mention the Scrapyard Regulator on the other thread?
Even if it is an excessively thick fighter design, for $120 you'd be hard pressed to find a tougher knife, anywhere, ever.
$25 sheath will be available, $10 to have them CNC the top guard off for a more camp friendly handle.
Should be available any time now. (fingers crossed)

For skinning game I suggest a Spyderco Military or Bill Moran (3oz fixed blade, lots of belly, very thin full flat grind, available in Orange!).

What about a Busse Boss Street? Even with a sheath it will be inside your budget.

Instead of going for name brand fabulousness how about getting what you need?

For 300 Dollars you can get:

A ESEE RC6 or RC5 it will do everything your mind can think up to get you out of a nasty situation with enough money left over for:

1. Dinner for you and a hottie at any chain restaurant...

plus...

an Izula to handle the smaller, finer things in a SHTF situation or...

2. Part of a BUSSE.

Good Luck with whatever you decide.

A bark river or 2...

Swamp Rat Howling Rat...Scrap Yard S5

RC3 or 4

Koyote knives in knife makers....

Sooooo many great knives!

This is what I would go with, as I am currently very interested in their selection. Specifically the RC-6 for general purpose needs. Also, you could go with their monster-size http://www.cumberlandknifeworks.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=394&category_id=78&manufacturer_id=0&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=28RTAK II for all your batoning needs.

NMSFNO gets my vote, one tough S.O.B. You can beat, pry, dig, skin, anything you'd want to do with knife and not have to worry about it taking it.

You should check out the Makers section here. I would suggest John at JK Knives. If you know what you want and can sketch it, John can make it. His prices are fair and knives are excellent.
