Does anyone know if there was a 317 that had gunmetal colored spines? Thanks for any info.

Gunmetal is a copper alloy and when the term is used as a color it is a dark gray.
I have also seen the term used describe bluing on a gun.
I'm not sure what you are asking.

I will yes. BUT, what I have seen as 'gunmetal' color is the natural patina color of the non-stainless springs in the very early models. Much like other early Camillus made Buck models.

Does that sound about what you were thinking........300

I saw one on the auction site advertised as having "rare gunmetal" spines as if that is special. My thought was, "That's a creative advertising term for tarnish or corrosion."

Yeah I talked to the guy and he said he just put it that way because he didn't know what it was since it didn't look like any other 317. But I think 300bucks nailed it. Thanks 300

Well, Craig, thanks to you and Matt I am learning. Right now, I feel pretty comfortable talking about the 317. There is a lot to learn about the rest.

In my collection of three 307's. I do have one 307 and the back springs are blue/gray and always wondered what the story behind the color difference.

You always have to have in your pocket of knowledge, most of those old 300's have Camillus cousins from the same blood line. In the 317 or the 307 or most all of those era 300s there are Camillus almost look-alikes. Cousins in the origin of their parts. If the 317 spring is not stainless then the Camillus cousin likely wasn't either. Rub a cut apple on the older 317s springs and they will darken...300

Well Bert…I finally got around to reading the Sept BCCI newsletter and have to say I really enjoyed the article you wrote about your research and conclusions on the 317. Very informative!!
It answered the question about the only one I have….a 1973. Thanks!!

This is why I need to be a BCCI member - are they articles ever leaked to a non-member?

Thanks for the kind words, Stumps. I'm glad you found it interesting.
