I'm looking to get a friend of mine a nice birthday gift. We both loved the movie 300 and I think the Spartan sword is super sexy. I found some Frank Miller "movie prop replicas" online, but am very weary of buying a piece of crap. I’m now thinking about having one custom made for him. Any advise?

I was going to make me one of these, I need to re find the dimensions though, I thought I saved them but I lost the info.

I don't know the quality of the movie prop items, hopefully someone has one and can share their thoughts on one, then you can make a better decision cost and quality wise.

Do you have a dollar value in mind?

Seem to remember they were about 30" overall,23" blade.
Expect to spend more than a couple bucks for a true custom.

Jerry Hossom made a Greek Kopis sword modeled and inspired from the movie 300.

See it here.

Thanks for all the input! I’m thinking I might get a replica first and play with it for a bit before custom building anything. When I do custom build, I'd like to keep it under $1K for now.

I know that both of those ones posted are made in India or Pakistan, but at least the Windlass model from Museum Replicas/Atlanta Cutlery is made from an identifiable type of steel. The Ren Fair crowd seems to like Museum Replicas gear. I've handled a few and they are MUCH nicer than the typical stainless Conan/Lord of the Rings crap. With that said, I think that Mr. Hossom's blade is actually closer to the general shape of a kopis than the movie sword, even though his is very "modern" in materials and execution. Remember that the weapons in 300 were designed by the same folks who had Xerxes, the king of the largest and most civilized empire in Western Asia looking like a 7 foot tall drum major from a San Francisco gay pride parade and the Spartans portrayed the wise and benevolent ancestors of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.:D Mr. Miller wasn't exactly going for historical accuracy OR functionality...lol.
