Can anyone tell me what year Buck changed to the 3 back springs on the 301 Stockman.

Thanks, and best regards,

My notes say about 1988 - 1989.

I'll take bertl's word for it.

'84-'85 is when Buck started making them in-house and still had 2 springs. I didn't have my coffee this morning before posting, sorry. I'm better now though...:D

I decided to actually check my notes. The 303 started in 1988, but my notes say 1990 for the 301, so I'll go along with Bear Claw.

I've done some extensive eBay research on this subject and here is what I've gathered on some of the cosmetic changes to the Buck-made 301's:

1985
brass liners
2 springs with sheep foot on same pivot as clip
BUCK shield

1989
changed shield to hammer style with open-end handle (although I have seen some from 1989 with the BUCK shield)

1990
changed liners/bolsters to one-piece nickel silver
changed shield to hammer-style with closed end handle

Since this research is based on the manufacturing date stamp and old blades from the previous year could have been used on knives of the following production year these dates could vary slightly.

Best,
Matthew

And since every thread is better with pictures, here's my (now regrettably sold) 301 with brass liners, 2 springs and open-handle hammer shield.

Never use knives as investments, you lose money or become attached and mourn the loss. 300

Dang, you guys conduct some good research. Good work... Bear good to see you post here. DM

I would like to thank all who responded to my request, and for the information, it is appreciated.

Best regards,
