looking at the next set of knives to start getting a few of and am considering the elk hoof stockman. tried to find the DW series but could only find the lancer and companion so grabbed those along with the vantage avid on my past order.

have been very pleased with my paua shell rush, giraffe 532, elk 112 and water buffalo 500 for edc roatation when wanting something a little nicer then regular 110 or sirus.

any of you have an opinion or exprience with that elk hoof model? thanks for any help

Wings,

I have the elk tracks 301 as a closet queen only. Hoof tracks are incised into the bone scale and will collect blood, cheese, watermelon juice, mud, gasket material or whatever if you use it as EDC if you don't keep it clean. But, they lend themselves to a good grip.

I ordered one untouched by my hand, and ended up sending it back because the scale had shifted in the incising process and the lowest hoof print was just sticking past the bottom edge of the scale. It was replaced with a perfect model in a satifactory short period of time. I have looked at a dozen others in stores and none were off center like mine.

Otherwise it is a nice regular 301 with a fancy scale... you pay for what you get, so price would go up if it was mirror polished like I would want it to be. Why ?

Once in a while I like to pull out, in the company of other manly men, a 'fancy' Buck equal to that 'other brands' finish, but without it being a custom shop job.

sounds like what i'm looking for. i have my collection of plain janes i'm building for routine edc but enjoy those elk, water buff, paua shell versions of the same knives for dressier or special event type carry. and have started just wiping em down good at the end of the day i carry them the same way i would if carrying a nickel or blued handgun instead of my normal stainless.

my tastes so far run towards the user type with just a little added "nice" to set it apart from the local store's typical stock for those times while still being capable of any use my plain jane Buck's would do every day.

I can dig it! While out to lunch with a few of the good ole boys last week, I dragged out my D2 118 to cut up my ham steak. Bucks rule!
